VGF Four Job Fiesta, Part Two: Electric Boogaloo

Post by smol Kat » Sun May 27, 2018 10:55 pm

Decided to make a new topic rather than bump the old one; new year, new rolls etc--but if you'd rather merge them that's cool too!

Any interest in doing this again this year? The challenge starts Friday, June 1 (that's a few days from now, people <3).

From last year's topic:

Four Job Fiesta Rules:
1. We'll do a Normal run. From the Four Job Fiesta site, here's the description:
  • Players will be assigned one class from each crystal. Until all four classes are unlocked, players are only permitted to use the classes they have currently unlocked. Bare/Suppin/Freelance can only be used until the Wind Crystal job is unlocked.
2. There's a Twitter bot that handles everything, found on the aforementioned Four Job Fiesta site. It'll guide us through what we're each doing. Or, if you're a pleb like Kat, you can roll your party here; scroll down to Final Fantasy V.

3. Let's all roll a different job set. That way, when we come into the thread to discuss, we can compare notes and our unique experiences.

4. If you want, you can always make a pledge to Child's Play charity through the FJF site. The wider community FJF time window will end on August 31.
why can I not remember how to tag on new!VGF

~~~
And again, since I don't have Twitter, but I do have a little more income than I did last year, my pledges:
  • $5 base
  • $5 per on-stream party wipe (If you'd like to watch me flail about I plan to stream Sunday nights at about 9 p.m. ET here; times are variable)
I didn't finish my run last year, but I'm pretty sure I didn't wipe more than three or four times, so it'll be a reasonable (for me) total donation.
Also, please don't feel pressured to make a pledge of your own. I just like to charity.
~~~

The Challengers:
1. Kat
2. Val
3. ML
4. RU
5. ?!?

Whoops. Haven't logged on in a while. But I'm not up for it right now since I've got other stuff going on. Keep tagging me though when this stuff happens because maybe later I'll be able to do it.

but anyway I'm posting to let yall know that RPGLB is hosting The Run(tm) which is the opening race. Jobs were voted on by the community and it's a four-way race; all four runners are bound by those jobs. Check it out! (I have it on in the background. Still working. D:)

It's timeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

If you're an old fart like me and you don't have or want Twitter, apparently there's an app. There's the job picker itself and then if you want to stream (or just want strats or look at the subreddit) there's a support app as well.

Debating whether to get started right now and get the half hour's worth of cutscenes out of the way or to just stream later. Hmmmm.

^ Awesome! The more the merrier.

This is probably something I'll be doing mainly on weekends, but I figured today I could at least make it to the Wind Shrine and find out what my first job is.

Image

Aww, it's my party from last year. Those four jobs served me well. I wonder if this year's draw will be as lucky?

So I got the party together, got the ship, went to the shrine, yadda yadda... you know how it goes. My Wind Crystal job ended up being...

Image

Thief! ...Not sure if I'm happy about this or not.

The good thing is that Thieves can steal items (duh), which will certainly be very handy. They also prevent back attacks (cool), reveal hidden passages (meh), and increase your movement speed outside battle (holy **** thank you). Thieves also have the highest agility stat in the game. The bad is that their strength and stamina (i.e. HP) stats are terrible, especially for a physical class. Their equipment is limited to knives, boomerangs, and lightweight armor, so that kind of sucks.

Not the worst job in the game I guess, but I sure hope my other three are able to make up for its weaknesses.

I checked my Wind job, and I'll be starting out with...BLUE MAGE.

This will be interesting. I have very little experience with this class. Thankfully I'll have access to some great damaging and healing spells. If I get extremely lucky, maybe I'll get Beastmaster and get access to White Wind. That would be clutch.

Haven't started playing yet, but I will.

Blue Mage is fantastic, especially early game. Vampire was my primary means of healing last year.

I started today too! I rolled Thief. I'm not sure how much I should really be grinding. One thing I didn't even consider is that you only have access to two Knives/Daggers until Carwen so that's two forced stealer/healers. o_O

e: I also got Squeege interested so he started today as well! (he's even busier than I usually am so dunno how much he'll be able to get to this but still cool.) His wind roll was Monk.

So, yeah, if you want to join us, it's never too late! ^_^

As Kat said, there are no weapons I can buy for my Thieves until Carwen, which is two bosses and a dungeon away. The Skeletons found in the Ship Graveyard have the possibility of dropping Daggers, though. As for stealing... pretty much nothing I can get at this point except Potions, which is fair enough because I'll be needing plenty of healing items to keep my squishy Thieves alive. I decided to give my two knives to Fartz and Faris, and stick Lenna and Galuf in the back row to serve as healers until they could be properly armed.

Image

The first boss fight with by band of Thieves wasn't difficult, but it was tedious as hell. The fight dragged on because my party was dealing pitiful damage, and Karlabos liked to paralyze my two primary damage-dealers.

Image

I hit my first wall with Siren. It was easy enough to damage her during her living phase, and she had a habit of wasting her turn casting Scan or Mute. The undead phase was rough though: immune to physical attacks and having some powerful physical hits of her own, I couldn't do much but move my fighters to the back row and defend until she morphed back. I had precious few Potions at this point and didn't want to use them up trying to damage her. I couldn't damage her enough to defeat her before depleting my resources, so I ended up getting my first party wipe. :facepalm:

I went back and farmed some Potions to use during the fight (both offensively and defensively), and even managed to get a Dagger drop. After that I was able to head back to Siren and do away with her quite easily.

So far being able to steal items hasn't been very helpful, since there's been nothing to steal but Potions. The Headstone enemies on North Mountain were the first exception, having Silver Specs I was able to plunder from them.

Image

The fight with Magissa and Forza ended up being waaaay easier than I thought it would be. My characters were able to do enough damage just attacking with Daggers that Magissa died almost immediately after summoning her husband, and before she could cast any dangerous spells. After that it was just a matter of wearing Forza down with attacks while healing anyone whose HP dipped into the double digits.

So far it's been tricky just using Thieves, but I seem to do okay as long as I stay stocked up on healing items. I will definitely miss having a White Mage in my party this run.

Yeah, I'm not sure that my levels will be adequate for Karlabos (I think the party is L7). I imagine that after that I'll be all right (ofc now I'm sp00ped about Siren, but if you can get Dagger drops that's more reason for me to grind a whole bunch...)

^ The drop rate for Daggers is apparently 1/16, though it felt like I had to fight my way through several dozen Skeleton formations just to get one. I think once you have a good amount of Potions, that's enough to safely take down Siren.
