Switching to phpBB

Post by Shane » Tue Aug 08, 2017 5:07 pm

I have been planning on doing this for a while but kept procrastinating but ran into some completely unnecessary hosting issues that have me looking at completing it this month. This normally goes fairly smoothly with some minor hiccups, but I would expect most of the data to transfer over more or less as is. I may end up deleting some older posts if the database size proves to be too excessive.

Huh.

Well, here's hoping for a smooth transition.

Is this going to affect any of the features we are familiar with?

XenForo is probably the better board, but it's also quite bloated, like vBulletin was. phpBB is comparable but would anticipate some sacrificed functionality, but before I can dig into the mods and see what's useful/functional, hard to say precisely what may be removed or added. I guess all of the good free phpBB hosts have been gobbled up by Tapatalk recently, so that idea's probably out. Still, want to switch, though, as I don't have much need for a dedicated server anymore since everything other than VGF is pretty basic. Allegedly, it's so lightweight that a shared hosting account should be sufficient. I'm tempted to just drop it on its own VPS and see what happens. If it's slow, it's slow, but at least it wouldn't weigh down anything else. Some of these cloud VPSs are quite nice, can be adjusted up or down on the fly, so I'm thinking of just grabbing a base model and then tossing any donation money toward upgrades.

Logged in. Wasn't too much hassle, although the login is flagging as insecure.

I will be happy to support any graphics changes as necessary.

Can the new board support a "new posts" page like the old one? I used it constantly.

I'm assuming this forum is only basic because it just got put up. Once it becomes more stable, I'm guessing more will be added.

Search is not enabled. Don't want to bother with it until the server move. By extension, recent topics are also not enabled. Tentatively put the 10 most recent topics at the top of the index page. I could expand that number to whatever number really but don't want to take up too much room at the top. Bottom is also an option.

Private messages. Can anyone else confirm any issues?

Wait, f**k.

Are blogs going away? Because if so I would like a heads up so I can get everything moved somewhere.

It had occurred to me that this might concern you, since you're the only person I remember still using yours. I'd suggest you make the move anyway, it's not really a good place for one.

I like them being at the top of the page, stops me having to always click to a different page and keeps the index accessible. No issues so far, save that I'm pretty well conditioned to check avatars on the left. Getting the hang of it, now.

Shane - I'm getting flood control, if that's not supposed to be on for supermods/mods.

I kind of assumed it was inevitable.

I need to think about where to go until Writscrib goes public. I might have to bite the bullet on Tumblr if I can't find a good blog site.

But that has nothing to do with this conversation and I'll figure that out on my own.
