In the forest maze in The Secret of Monkey Island, it's possible to come across a large tree stump. Examining it will cause Guybrush to point out a a tunnel at the base leading to a system of catacombs. On attempting to enter, a message will flash onscreen asking the player to "insert disk 22" in order to continue. After failing to do so, the game will request a few more ridiculously high numbered disks, before Guybrush gives up and muses that he'll just have to skip that part of the game.

Despite being an obvious joke, LucasArts got so many calls from players asking about missing disks that the gag was removed from later versions of the game.

When you defeat the second phase of Lavos in Chrono Trigger, the "smartest" character currently in your party will reveal that Lavos contains the DNA of all life on Earth and has been guiding the evolution of the planet for its own purposes. The priority for this dialogue is as follows:

Lucca > Robo > Magus > Marle > Frog > Ayla > Crono

There is no dialogue written for Crono (for obvious reasons), but curiously there is for Ayla (she comments that Lavos "smells" like all living things), even though it's impossible to have a party consisting of just her and Crono.

Jolly Roger Bay has the fewest coins of any course in Super Mario 64, the total being a mere 104.

Tiny-Huge Island has the most, at 192.

According to Masahiro Sakurai, Final Smashes were intended to have been a part of the Smash Bros. series from the very first game, but were not introduced until Brawl for whatever reason. The first game contains unused sound files for Kirby, Fox, Pikachu, Captain Falcon, and Ness that most likely would've been used during their Final Smashes.

^for that matter, Melee was originally going to have character selection animations like the first game had

what's interesting is that a lot of these are essentially looping-animation versions of certain results screen victory poses, and that some of those animations would return for the results screen animations in Brawl.

^Also worth noting that Sheik has a "Selected!" animation, which means at some stage in development she was probably select-able from the CSS kinda like how PM does it.

Whoa that's really cool.I haven't played the N64 Smash in so long that I totally forgot character selection animations was a thing they did.

The smiley face sprite for Evil Otto (the deadly, invincible foe from Berzerk) was originally intended to be a placeholder, but the devs felt it was effective enough and kept it in the final game.

Rocket Rush, the final level of Krematoa in Donkey Kong Country 3, is named "ponkotsu roketto de gō" in Japanese, which translates to "Go by Piece-of-Junk Rocket".

In 1990, id Software made a demo for a PC version of Super Mario Bros. 3, hoping to get approval from Nintendo to produce a PC port of the game. Allegedly Nintendo was impressed by the demo, but declined to give id a license, their desire being to keep Mario on their own consoles.

I CANNOT BELIEVE I HAVEN'T MENTIONED THIS ONE YET

In Tales of Symphonia (GameCube version), the model for the rheaird you obtain in the Renegade Base is blue. There are technically 4 colors of rheairds that you see the cast riding in the overworld, but the frontmost one that the party lead rides is blue, so that's the color of the one you see Lloyd take from the base.

However, in the cutscene immediately after this, we see Lloyd riding a red one and Raine being on the blue one. To rectify this, in later releases of the game, the model for the rheaird you obtain in the Renegade Base has been updated to red. This removes the inconsistency in the following scene, but makes it a bit strange when the lead rheaird in the overworld is now blue when thus far the associated color for them has been red. (Also, later in the game on another cutscene with Rheairds, Lloyd is still on a blue one. So what IS the truth.)

No one in the entire world cares about this as much as I do, but for some ungodly reason, the change in later versions REALLY BOTHERS ME.

The following are instances in which we see the 'main' or **Lloyd's** rheaird as blue in BOTH instances of the game:

Image

Image

Image

IT'S IN THE HECKIN OPENING COME OOONNNNNN

but because it's red in that ONE CUTSCENE the later versions changed the model in the base to red as seen here (this one was blue in gamecube):

Image

it is also red in this added anime cutscene, which was not in the original:

Image

The early concept art for the rheairds was blue! The main one in Phantasia was blue!! That one single isolated cutscene aside, the associated color for rheairds is CLEARLY INTENDED TO BE BLUE, and dear **** heck why on earth do I care about this so much

if they wanted to clear inconsistencies they should have just changed the color of Lloyd's rheaird in the next scene and had him always on the blue one, not arbitrarily change another instance to red and have the overwhelming majority still be blue. Anyway. moving on

EDIT:

BUT WAIT THERES FFJKJKFDJKGSLFDINGI MORE!!!!!

Image

THIS IS A SCREENCAP FROM THE REMAKE!!!!!!!!! WHERE THEY BOTHERED TO CHANGE THE MODEL OF THE RHEAIRD TO RED TO MATCH ONE ISOLATED CUTSCENE!!!! IN THE BACKGROUND OF THE YUAN/BOTTA FIGHT, WE CLEARLY SEE THE BLUE MODEL OF THE **** RHEAIRD!!!!!!! OH MY GOD IF YOU'RE GONNA CHANGE SOMETHING THAT MINOR AT LEAST BE **** CONSISTENT L O R D

THEY ACTUALLY HECKING HAVE IT BLUE IN THIS FIGHT AND THEN MAGICALLY RED IMMEDIATELY AFTER like hey guys if you wanted to nitpick minor things you could've paid attention to those cutscenes where the HDMI aspect ratio reveals the unmodeled edges of things that were initially made for a composite game

According to both series creator Shigesato Itoi and EarthBound localizer Marcus Lindblom, Jeff's friend Tony is in love with him.

val this topic is *trivia*, not things that are incredibly obvious within the game if you aren't completely blind and straight

--

mentioned this in above post, but hey people, remember that when you port composite games into HDMI aspect ratios, please make sure the models are actually finished and weren't just hidden offscreen because uhhhhh:

^ Quiet, you.

In addition to creating the MOTHER series, Itoi voiced Tatsuo (father of main characters Satsuki and Mei) in My Neighbor Totoro, has served as a judge on several episodes of Iron Chef, and hosts his own news/blogging website which has been updated almost every day since 1998.
