thanks bro

I believe the overall winner of the Stardew arena was Tropicala. Summer seemed to be the more popular category, as well.

Today's arena...

Mario Spinoff Credits

Mario Kart 64

Mario Tennis

Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

Super Mario RPG

Yoshi's Island

Super Mario Kart

OR....a write-in?

I didn't realize it until now but my god, you could throw Double Dash' credits song at the end of any anime and I really think it would be fine. Superior anime vibes bursting at the seams from that little jingle.

For that, I'm gonna have to give it up to Double Dash for versatility.

Feel like it could be a pokemon jingle also.

The Super Mario RPG credits theme is so far ahead of the others in terms of context and scope that it almost feels like it should be excluded from the category out of fairness.

^^you know, honestly, I was looking for a good video of that song, and I just gave up. But that’s a fantastic addition.

^I get what you mean, but it depends on what you’re into. It’s certainly the most involved and complex, but in terms of just pure raw anthemic greatness, my personal vote goes to Mario Kart 64. Simply because there’s no reason that a spinoff cartoon kart racing game should have a credits song anywhere NEAR that good

I like Yoshi's Island. Credits theme tend to get me right in the chest, and the best ones make you think about your journey to that point. That one just fits, you know.

I gotta go with Mario Kart 64. It's on a level of its own.

SMRPG and Mario Party are runners-up.

How could you leave off this masterpiece?

In all seriousness, gotta go with SMRPG even though I hadn't heard it before.

^Even if you haven’t played the game, the SMRPG entire ending sequence is worth watching:

Shimomura is such a great composer. I'm glad she's still scoring Mario RPGs.

Well that last one was more or less a tie between Mario RPG and Mario Kart 64!

Unannounced Hiatus of the VGM arena is over! Thanks for bearing with me. It's been a crazy couple of weeks here.

This round will focus on...

Opening hooks!

Had this idea on the ride home from Nashville today. What are some of the best opening hooks in Video Game Music? This category is ridiculously broad, so I can only hope to give a few examples. Write-ins are encouraged on this one.

ONLY FOCUS ON THE FIRST COUPLE SECONDS OF MUSIC WHEN YOU VOTE! Obviously a factor would be "how well it leads in to the rest of the awesome song," but the voting is just on the hook.

I'll do my best:

The first four seconds of Bob-Omb Battlefield

The first four seconds of Super Mario Kart's Battle Mode

The first three seconds of Yoshi's Island Athletic Theme

The first four seconds of Link to the Past's Hyrule Castle

The first six seconds of Napalm Man

The first ten seconds of Energy Generator from Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers

The first five seconds of Eternal Star from Mario Party 3

The first seven seconds of Mad Forest from Castlevania III

And again--write in your own suggestions, too. I may have focused a little too heavily on 8- and 16-bit eras, but that's just what's on my mind these days. What's your vote?

Of the ones you listed, I gotta go with Super Mario Kart. I really love SMK's soundfont.

A few other opening riffs that come to mind are "Bloody Tears", "Fight Against Smithy", and "At Doom's Gate". Out of all of them, I think I'll put my vote for "Bloody Tears".

Gotta represent the last 10 years:

The first 10 (it loops, but you get the idea) of "Life will Change" from Persona 5

The first 12 seconds of Decisive Battle II from Octopath Traveler

The first 10 seconds of "Thrash Pack" from Pyre

The first 15 seconds of "Battle! Elite Four" from Pokemon Black and White

^Nice ones. I thought about putting a Pokémon Battle in the OP, but I honestly just couldn’t pick one, since basically all of them intentionally have these huge crazy openers for the battle transition.

Out of that first list I'd go with Bob-omb Battlefield. I'm a jazzy kind of guy and love me some doots.

One immediate piece that comes to mind is this:

I always liked how that final battle piece opened up.
