VGF Attempts the 12-Hour Challenge
12 Hour Challenge #7
July 27-29, 2018
The 12-Hour Challenge is a Speedrun Community Event that is taking place at the end of the month. The basic idea is to Learn a game to speedrun in 12 hours. Some people think that speedrunning is too time-prohibitive or difficult to get into. The idea behind the 12HC is to show people that...that's not true! You can get into speedrunning on any level. You don't have to go for world records, and you don't have to grind out 40 hours a week to get good at a game. The best way to get into speedrunning is to simply start playing a game. So let's play some games!
Here are some useful links, including the full information pastebin that I'd really say you should read if you're going to participate.

I plan on doing this, and it's my first-ever 12HC. In the past I thought to myself, "How can I possibly get 12 hours to sit and run a game?" But the 12HC isn't strict. You can do 4 hours a day over the weekend, or you can even split it out further than that (1 hour a day for 12 days?) and no one will really mind. It's just about getting into speedrunning or learning a new game.
Oh, I should mention: every 12 Hour Challenge has a theme. This year's is...
Now for something completely different
Learn something that has never been run at Games Done Quick. This can be a game that's brand new and hasn't had the chance yet, a game that has been submitted before but never accepted, or a game that's completely off everyone's radar that you will bring to the forefront.
The theme is optional. Especially for us at VGF, where only a few of us have speedrun games before, you are certainly welcome to ignore the theme. Just learn/play what you want. There are also some details about signing up and streaming your runs--again, this is optional. Totally up to you.
So, anyone interested? I'll tag a bunch of people to garner interest. Take it or leave it. Sorry for the notification, if you're the kind of person that gets bothered by notifications.

Sounds interesting but I'll probably be busy playing another game. If I get a chance I'll probably do hyper-casual X2.

The cool thing about the 12HC is that it’s very lax. So if you’re unavailable that specific weekend, it doesn’t preclude you from taking part some other time.

Re: VGF Attempts the 12-Hour Challenge
This is a really neat idea (and makes me miss the Get Yourself Speedrunning campaigns, started to pick up Pokemon Red glitchless because of it). For me personally, though, the kinds of games I'm most interested in speedrunning aren't really conducive to a challenge like this. Y'all have fun and I hope to see some good runs! <3

Re: VGF Attempts the 12-Hour Challenge
Speedruns just aren't my thing.
I'd be the worst speedrunner. Like, two minutes in, I'd need to go potty, and then my sister would call me on the phone, and after that was done I'd want a nap or a tv break or some taco hell or a good long stare at the wall or something. And then the store would just call me in anyway.
Also my favourite game franchise bar none is GH/RB, and, well, you don't really speedrun those. "I Want You to Want Me (Live)" will always take at least 3:44 to complete, no matter how rad you are at it.

I'm interested, though that's already going to be a pretty busy weekend for me. I'll consider it.

Re: VGF Attempts the 12-Hour Challenge
Speedrun implies beating a game. I haven't reached the end of a game in years. XD
Maybe I can, I don't know, hit up Link's Awakening? Probably not manage to speedrun it, but certainly play it.

Re: VGF Attempts the 12-Hour Challenge
I've got nothing against anyone that likes speedrunning, but as someone who rarely replays games and primarily plays them for the worlds/stories, it's pretty fundamentally incompatible with me. Trying to speedrun a new game would just ruin it.
Maybe someday if I ever run out of good games I haven't played.

Yes. Once I have more time, actually, I'm considering picking up Legend of Mana.

Fair enough. I admire your ability to not constantly go back to games you’ve already beaten.I am nobody wrote: ↑Thu Jul 12, 2018 6:08 amI've got nothing against anyone that likes speedrunning, but as someone who rarely replays games and primarily plays them for the worlds/stories, it's pretty fundamentally incompatible with me. Re: VGF Attempts the 12-Hour Challenge
Disclaimer: I adore this premise.
And I’m interested in doing it for Sonic Forces because I’ve been really interested in learning it as a speedgame eventually (I’ve only ever ran an IL so I’m hoping that still counts.) And since GDQ is a big coward that refuses to let in Forces even though IT IS A REALLY GOOD SPEEDGAME because of how broken but also platform heavy it is.... totally works.
That said, for the immediate future, I know myself well enough to know you’ll have to pry Symphonia from my cold dead button mashing hands as far as time being dedicated to speedruns goes. I’ll be back here when I have a satisfactory time and am looking to pick up Forces though!!!!!

Re: VGF Attempts the 12-Hour Challenge
So I was playing Pajama Sam: No Need to Hide When It's Dark Outside and realized that it would be stupidly short if I skipped all the cutscenes and the randomness worked out to match the playthrough I was doing anyway. Short enough that it felt kind of ridiculous to not at least give it a shot.
I don't know if it's done at GDQ before, but I got 3:55 the first time the RNG came up for me. Considering it's less commitment than microwave vegetables, I might try to improve that a bit when the 27th comes around.

Re: VGF Attempts the 12-Hour Challenge
Glad to see some interest in this!
I’ll personally be learning and running Wario Land II. Gonna start by learning the Main Story Glitchless category, and depending on how things go I could get a run in for All Levels Glitchless.
