So I forgot how hard Sigma Stage 1 is. I might be grabbing a few more health packs than I originally planned on getting.

All right, first run is done. Lots of kinks to work out.

Image

So here is what I'm picking up:
-Health packs in Flame Mammoth, Armored Armadillo, Sting Chameleon
-Sub-tanks in Storm Eagle, Armored Armadillo*
-Body Armor* (in Sting Chameleon's stage)

Asterisked items are items that I didn't pick up in this run, very much regretted not getting, and will get in future runs. It's gonna take a very long time to get the Body Armor, but I just couldn't hang with the bosses in Sigma's Lair. They hit like trucks. It will definitely benefit me in the long run.

My goal is sub-50. With some practice, I really think I can get there. Gonna try to do one run per night right after the kiddo's bedtime.

btw, some more boss weakness tips:
-Body armor Cyclops dude - weak to Boomerang (which Sting Chameleon is also weak to, so be careful)
-Sigma 1 - The Spider thing is the worst boss ever, just try to hit him with BLUE charge shots (not pink--they don't work well on him)
-Sigma 2 - The Face boss is weak to Sting, so don't waste it all on Storm Eagle.
-Sigma 3 - The Tank is weak to Boomerang. It's not too bad.
-Sigma's Dog - Weak to Ice
-Jedi Sigma - Weak to Spark
-Final Sigma - Weak to Rolling Shield

First run done! US 1.1 on SNES9X with PS4 controller.

2:03:14

What I picked up/boss order:
Spoiler.
Body/Buster/Legs
Storm/Mandrill/Mammoth Hearts (missed Armadillo's by a rock, lol)
Storm/Mandrill/Armadillo Tanks (in retrospect I could have grabbed Mammoth's...)

Penguin->Kuwanger->Chameleon->Eagle->Mandrill->Armadillo->Octopus->Mammoth (last 3 might be out of order, I don't remember)
What went wrong:
Spoiler.
-Game Over on Chameleon
-2 Game Overs on Bospider
-Game Over on D-Rex
-Spent 30 minutes on Sigma

so yeah, this run was a trainwreck. I continued because I got past Kuwanger. Easy to improve on I guess.
Phew. Part of me wants to jump back in for a better time, but the sensible part of me knows to leave it for later.

^Bospider is the sole reason that my Sigma 1 split was over 20 minutes.

Also, as far as picking up the Buster upgrade--Zero gives you the Buster upgrade for free when he

dies
. Could save you some time, if you're ok going without the Buster upgrade until Sigma 1.

Spoiler.
Yeah, Zero was where I got my Buster upgrade. You can't get the upgrade in Mammoth's place without the Helmet, after all, so in any%
there's no reason to go out of the way to get either.
As for damaging Bospider, Shotgun Ice does the same amount of damage as a charge shot and +1 if charged.

I gave it a shot. My first time playing the game, though I did glance at a couple speedruns beforehand. I died at least once per level, not including the intro and Chill Penguin. I think I had the hardest time on Sigma 1, not including the final boss.

Intro - 4:28
Penguin - 13:26
Mandrill - 26:14
Armadillo - 37:32
Octopus - 52:57
Kuwanger - 1:00:05
Chameleon - 1:10:46
Eagle - 1:19:22
Mammoth - 1:34:54
Sigma 1 - 1:50:42
Sigma 2 - 1:58:10
Sigma 3 - 2:08:18
Final Sigma - 2:45:15

Looks like I've got some work to do. I'll try to do at least one more run of this, now that I've actually played the game through.

^Man, any time under 3 hours for your first time even playing the game, let alone speedrunning, is really impressive. Nice work, Val.

So my goal was under 50.

Image

Looks like I need a new goal.

The Body Armor was incredibly helpful. I went through all of Sigma's palace with almost zero deaths--just one death on Final Sigma. The whole rest of the run only had two deaths as well--too much damage boosting in Flame Mammoth's stage, and then dash-jumping directly onto spikes in Launch Octopus's stage.

But other than that...this run was pretty solid all around. My climb up Kuwanger's tower was really quick this time. I beat Bospider and barely got hit (pretty sure I'm just getting better at reading his pattern). I've been using a few more weapons in levels to get me through faster (mostly the Tornado). Overall...really happy with this. Going on a trip for a few days, but I might try to improve it next weekend.

edit: just realized that picture doesn't give any actual times.

well, I'm tired and bad so I'm going to call it quits on Wolf-Sigma tonight, but here's how I'm doing:

Image

-Axed Eagle tanks, got Mammoth tank
-accidentally revisited Sting's stage
-died twice on Armadillo's stage (they were pretty amusing deaths)
-got part of the text skip glitch in Sigma1
-took optimal deaths on Sigma2 and 3 bosses

^Hey, nice progress.

I got the first part of the Sigma 1 text skip glitch as well--but I wasn't aware there was a second part to it. What does that entail?

I also got the Armadillo re-fight skip in Sigma 3, which I was pretty happy about.

Yeah, you can skip the text that's just before the Vile Armor fight.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sumooLB6SsI
Once you get into the next room, you can move as soon as the textbox shows up. You need to get through the room and out the door with the textbox still on screen. Then, after the door closes, you dash forward, shooting a Rolling Shield (I'm not sure why this is necessary, but it is). As the screen is transitioning from left to right, hold start so that you will skip all of the text faster.

If you don't do this as the screen transitions, and attempt to do it after the transition happens, you will soft lock (freeze) the game. Zero will be stuck mid-air and his mouth will never stop moving.

hm. Sounds risky. Or at least like something I'd have to practice before I choke away a good run.

I knew it was possible to fight Vile while the text was still scrolling, but I just thought that was part of the first cutscene skip. When I got into the room and had to wait through the text, I wondered what I had done wrong. Now I know.

Nice, dudes!

Kinda my idea is to tackle this like I would a piece of music and practice stage by stage. Unfortunately, I'm much too tired to do anything today (and I was out for most of yesterday).

Had a bunch of deaths and bad Sigma stages I killed Sigma first so try this'll do. Lot of room for improvement but I'm getting a bit burnt out so maybe I'll settle for this sub-hour. Now I can say that I casually speedrun MMX.
