Clowns

Do you think they're scary?

I think I can understand why some people find them creepy, but they've never bothered me. Although I did have this bizarre nightmare about a clown when I was really little.

Nah. Not me. But I can understand it. The face paint is there to disguise the clown's emotion (at least according to one clown in Pokemon Diamond/Pearl), and people are uneasy when they aren't aware of another person's intent.

From what I can tell it's more due to the exaggerated emotions/physical features that create a kind of uncanny valley effect.

I don't like them, but I don't hate them, neither.

I don't think it's weird to be scared of them. I'm scared of horses, myself. They're dangerous. Clowns got the potential to be dangerous, too. It's normal to fear danger, man.

Ah, actually that makes a lot more sense.

Why are clowns still a thing? They just seem so out of date to me.

If they're not scary to people then they're not funny, which is what they're supposed to be. They're neither scary nor funny to me and whenever I see one I groan and roll my eyes and get bored.

It's like asking why anything is still a thing. Some people probably feel that way about theater.

^Anybody wonders why theatre is still a thing is himself a clown. An ass-clown, come to that. Yeah, I said it. (Boo the 'controversial' guy.)

I'm not particularly scared of clowns except for the ones that are legitimately designed to be scary, like It and such. Regular ol' clowns are fine.

Using "clown" as an insult is great, though.

Now I know there's a reason you shouldn't blame others when you do something wrong, and that reason is: you might get caught and have to apologize to a bunch of dumb peasants.

I strongly dislike face paint because of lingering sensory issues, but that just means I find them uncomfortable rather than scary. Definitely agree with Scotty on not being sure why they still exist.

Has anyone here ever laughed at a clown? Like, in a jovial, 'oh, you clowns and your hijinx' kind of way? I can't picture it. Maybe if they did funny things. Get clowns doing shtick together. Get three clowns doing a Three Stooges routine. That has the potential to be funny. If the clown is just there, looking like a weirdo in a fright wig, that isn't funny on its own.

My grandma used to clown for parades when she was young. Ma tells me grandma once went into the younger kids' room in her clown get-up, and all four of them started screaming their heads off in pure terror. That's actually pretty damn funny to me, talking about it now in the abstract, but clearly my tiny babby aunts and uncles didn't enjoy it.
