366. The ending (Diablo)

So you finally defeat the Dark Lord himself. You rip the soulstone from his forehead, and then... shove it into your own?

Since you are unable to destroy the soulstone at this point, your only option is to thrust it into your own body, containing Diablo within yourself for as long as your strength holds. If you've played the sequel, you know it doesn't last long.

367. "They took my baby." (Doom 3)

At some point in the game you will encounter a set of bloody footprints mysteriously appearing, and a ghostly voice will implore you to follow it. Then... this happens.

No explanation for any of this is ever given.

368. Poison Headcrab Zombies (Half-Life 2)

Image

Ravencroft isn't a very nice place. I mean, even during the first part where you use the gravity gun to blast apart everyone and everything you really don't want to live there. But it's during the second part where you're traveling rooftops and inside buildings that THIS GUY SHOWS UP. Poison Headcrabs on their own are bad because they make horrible shrieking noises and jump at your line of vision taking away all but 1 hit point. It rejuvenates over time but it's enough to put the fear of death into you. But the zombie variant is worse. Why? Because it has many of the poison bastards on it, shooting the head doesn't kill all the headcrabs so you have to search for them or risk a poison surprise and because this thing will literally throw the headcrabs at you! It's bad enough that when you're driving to Nova Prospekt they hid one of these in a house all by itself. And you'll hear it. And you will know true terror as you wonder where the hell it is.

Or you just leave. That's also an option.

369. Mirage Village/Phantom Village (Final Fantasy V)

Image

Mirrage Village is a city that was sucked into the Interdimensional Rift a thousand years ago. Unlike any other city in the game, this one is not visible on the overworld, being hidden within a forest. Finding it will result in the screen pixelating as if entering a battle, before taking you to the village. While the city does contain the best items, equipment and magic in the game, its inhabitants are mysterious and aloof, and the creepy Sealed Book theme plays as the village's background music.

In the final stretch of the game, you will revisit the village within the Interdimensional Rift, only here everyone and everything is frozen in time. One of the village NPCs you can speak to beforehand suggests that the village is normally in this frozen state, and that the villagers themselves are aware of it.

370. No News is Good News (Danganronpa [Series])
Image

Announcements mid-day in Danganronpa mean one of two things: A body has been discovered, or a rule change that will soon lead to option 1 has been enacted. Either way, an unpleasant scene isn't far off.

These scenes are apparently so scary that no one on the entire internet has taken a screenshot of the actual "A BODY HAS BEEN DISCOVERED" announcement except for fans of the anime's French translation.

371. Ghost Guess (Mario Party)

Image

Another single-player minigame featuring the same creepy music as Pedal Power, this one has you trying to identify the odd Boo out among a group of eight. If you pick the wrong one, or take too long trying to figure it out, they close in on you and apparently drag you down to Hell.

372. Edda (Final Fantasy XIV)

Image

Edda's story all starts off fairly well. She goes on an adventure with some of her closest friends, doing adventurely things and trying to save the world. All until the guy she has a thing for dies. And then she loses her ****. She decides the best course of action for this would be for her to carry his dismembered head around with her. Soon after that she decides necromancy would be even better. Because bad things never happen from that. Eventually she is defeated in battle and throws herself into a bottomless chasm. The end. Right? Maybe. As you and her former companion, Paiyo Reiyo, are exiting the dungeon, he looks back one last time to bid her good riddance. And then he sees her ghost. Good god that face.

374. The truth about Mist (Final Fantasy IX)

Image

"Mist" is a, well, mist-like substance occurring throughout the planet of Gaia, particularly on the Mist Continent. Mist causes a host of problems, such as spawning monsters and sparking war among countries.

As the game progresses, you begin to learn the true nature of Mist. Garland, caretaker of the dying planet Terra, sought to turn Gaia into the new home for the Terrans. To achieve this he used the Iifa Tree to halt the natural cycle of souls on Gaia. Rather than reincarnating, Gaian souls would become trapped within the tree, while Terran souls would take their place. The stagnant, tortured Gaian souls eventually turned into the Mist itself, being dispersed across the globe, and the souls eventually being reborn as monsters. The spread of Mist also helped further Garland's plans: the Mist provoked the nations of Gaia to enter war with one another, spreading death and thus allowing Terran souls to replace Gaian ones at a faster rate.

376. Gore Eating Monster Snake (Contra: Shattered Soldier)

Contra is no stranger to disturbing bosses. Hell, if it's not a robot then it's a creepy gore alien in Contra. But in Shattered Soldier that was turned up to 11 thanks to the new third dimension they could play with. See Boss from Contra 3 now with a human face for a butt.

So, in Stage 3 you come up against a strange white centipede thing on a conveyor belt heading to a grinder. It's not too difficult to defeat, but when you do defeat it it goes onto the conveyor belt and into the grinder. It wriggles and screams as it goes right in there stopping the conveyor belt. That might have been bad enough, but the worse part is going over the machine itself and find ground monster bits streaming out the other side being eaten by a giant eel monster. Then it pukes at you. And the puke will kill you if it hits you.

Gross.

Image

When I was young I disliked this stage. BTW, it's an excellent game that I have to play again.

Apparently Zelda trading cards were a thing as recently as 2010.

381. Loud Ass Spider that sounds like Godzilla (I Wanna Be The Boshy)

Image
Because the creator of this game thinks this thing screaming and crawling down from the top of the screen is funny. Then it flies straight back up before zooming down like a harrier jet while that god awful scream is repeated. Also, get used to hearing it as this thing is right after a crucial save point.

IT'S BOSHY TI- *SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE*

382. Surprise Skulltula (The Legend of elda: Ocarina of Time & Majora's Mask)

Image

Skulltulas aren't so bad normally. Later in the game however, they'll often dwell within discreet holes in the ceiling, allowing them to suddenly drop right on top of you and knock you on your ass.

383. T. rex Comes to Life (3-D Dinosaur Adventure)

One of the videos you can view in this edutainment game shows the fossilized skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus spawning organs and flesh before coming to life and sprinting off, only to suddenly revert back to a skeleton. It's pretty **** rad, though as a child it scared the crap out of me.

384. Final Boss Fight (Silent Hill 4: The Room)

Image

Silent Hill 4 can be really scary, especially if you aren't sure of what you're doing. The ghost victims, Walter chasing you about, the hauntings in your apartment... IF you know what you're doing it's mitigated quite a bit though (Hint: Don't use healing items for the first half of the game. Going back to your room heals you to full.). However, that doesn't help you all that much with the final boss. Now, usually final bosses in Silent Hill are a joke. You have tons of healing items and ammo so you can just run into the final boss and unload until its dead. Here, not so much. First of all, that thing in the picture isn't a danger to you. Walter Sullivan is though and he follows you around and shoots at you throughout the boss fight. What you NEED to do is to take spears all over the room (Into your limited inventory) and stab that boss monster with eight of them. Now here's the kicker: You've been escorting this girl named Eileen around the game and now she is slowly walking into this grinder in the middle of the room. It's a time limit that determines what ending you get and how you've treated her determines the speed she'll go at. The problem is that the game will occasionally CHANGE camera angles on you to show Eileen stepping closer to the machine and even at her slowest pace it'll happen often. If you aren't expecting this, you'll be on the edge of your seat trying to move as fast as you can and avoid Walter before Eileen is cut up into pieces. In this case, it's not the boss that's scary it's everything surrounding the boss that will scare the player.

You gotta give Silent Hill 4 props for that. At least a little bit.
