Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle

A more firm confirmation of the rumored Mario and Rabbids game has leaked out and we're able to confirm that, yes, Nintendo and Ubisoft are working on Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle on Switch and it is due out later this summer.

We received a few images from a source that are embedded in this article, detailing the pitch and concept of Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle.

The game is presented as an RPG that mixes exploration and turn-based combat. The exploration is estimated at 35% of the game with combat making up 65%. Each of the four worlds are "twisted" Mario worlds filled with references.

The combat is weapon-based as Mario and company can use guns for the first time (we can assume Yoshi's Safari doesn't count). Eight different characters can be used: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, and Rabbids dressed up as each of them. Combat is described as more tactical, and we've heard that it's more akin to a strategy RPG than what you might expect from a Mario RPG. On top of all that, the game can be played in co-op for two players as well.

Interestingly, Ubisoft appears to be publishing this game. It is estimated to be about 20 hours long and runs on Ubisoft's Snowdrop engine. The developers are Ubisoft Paris and Milan, who have experience with the Rabbids series, most recently with Rabbids Land on Wii U.
So. Uhh.

Rabbids have been stagnant for years (at least in the public eye) and were always depicted as the stupidest creatures on earth that only win because they're unpredictably crazy. They were Minions before Minions existed.

I have no faith in this game. The idea sounds mind-bogglingly dumb and made by people trying to relate with an audience much younger than them yet not understanding the nuance of it all. I.E. there's gonna be memes, humor that means nothing, and a general attitude of "MAN, adventures are so silly and trope-y, good thing we're not on one of THOSE right now *wink until eye falls back into socket*". I've heard someone say that this game got greenlit because it fits into the general direction of Mario RPGs as of late (no new characters, focus on gameplay, story comes second) so there's that for you. Personally, I don't see this hitting with anyone older than ten and anyone that age doesn't know what the f**k a Rabbid is.

P.S.: Rabbids doing "cool milennial things" has quite a lot of implications, Ubisoft. You sure you wanna go that route?

Edit: IS YOSHI'S TITLE THE EXPLOSIVE HEAD!?!?!? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I rather enjoyed Rayman Raving Rabbids. Heck, I like the Rayman series in general. Mario crossovers are nothing new. I'll give it a chance. If Nintendo is willing to put their characters in a tie-in like this, they may have faith as well. I'll focus on the aspect of having fun with the game rather than the details that it's a crossover with Rabbids. Gameplay comes first for me.

Part of me wishes the XCom-style gameplay were used for a new Nintendo IP.

That was a pretty rock solid start for Ubisoft's presentation. I don't think anyone was expecting them to bring out Shigeru Miyamoto.

Looks kinda like it would be an intense tactical RPG of sorts.

Huh, it looks like it might actually be a fun game. I definitely never expected a tactical RPG starring Mario, but I'm happy to see it. And it'll be interesting to see how the multiplayer works.

Just... why Rabbids?

Probably the only Rabbids game I'd consider getting.
