I think I can explain the first two, but that Tanooki Fire one has me baffled.

Feel free to shed some light on those two anyway. I'm interested.

It's just a play. Sometimes actors goof up.

^^Munchers aren't recognized by the game as enemies, they're recognized as blocks with a hitbox. That's why they're all but invincible. But when you hit a block with a raccoon tail, you get a coin out of it--so munchers do the same thing, since that's what they are. (That property is also why Munchers continue to animate and come in and out of pipes even while the game is paused.)

I'm pretty sure Thwomps don't have a hitbox until they're activated by Mario, and are just background elements until then.

But why the fire is only affected by the Tanooki statue when facing right but not facing left? Must just be some weird hurtbox oversight. Most fire like that faces left in Mario 3, so they probably remembered to make that invincible while forgetting to make right-facing fire invincible because it's less common. But that's jut a guess.

I'm interested in what would happen if you hit a Muncher from underneath, which would probably take a level editor. I'm guessing it would turn into a block, but you'd still get hit? Maybe?
