Re: Super Mario Odyssey
This game is pretty great. However, at 600 moons, I'm feeling pretty unenthused about the post-game as a whole thus far. Objectives get too samey across Kingdoms and the incentive for progression is handed to you all too easily. Maybe things will change but I definitely preferred the game before the credits, which hasn't been a thing since Galaxy or NSMBWii I guess.

Re: Super Mario Odyssey
SD and I got the game to celebrate our anniversary, so far I am at the Forest kingdom, having near maxed out the Desert. This is, like Breath of the Wild, very nearly what I expected and desired from a 3D Mario game and to have it finally appear on the Switch is fantastic. It is very good to see Nintendo gaining new life and re-evaluating their core direction for these series once more.

Re: Super Mario Odyssey
I'm around 750 moons or so. Almost completed with the Luncheon Kingdom. Only have Bowser's Castle, Moon, and the <Spoiler> Kingdom left--already did all of the Dark Side.
I'll be sad when it's done.
to X-3's point about the repeated objectives, I actually don't mind. The only moons I really don't like are the traveling birds, because they just take forever. But I love doing the Koopa races, I enjoy the Goomba Towers of Love...no repeating objective aside from the birds has really felt tedious to me.

Re: Super Mario Odyssey
I managed to acquire every unique Moon and costume. Now to grind to 999 Moons (I don't know if doing that does anything, but) and do THAT and then... it ends. (edit: I did it)
The repeated objectives that vary from Kingdom to Kingdom like the races are great. Stuff like catching birds and rabbits and talking to a recurring NPC out in the open, not so much. Post game wasn't that bad overall though.

So about that Ruined Kingdom. Holy hell, this game is so perfect.

Re: Super Mario Odyssey
DLC incoming.
During the surprise Nintendo Direct Mini this morning, Nintendo announced that Super Mario Odyssey is receiving a free update in February with new items and opportunities to compete with other players online.
Once the update is released, players who have completed the story mode can look forward to Balloon World, which you enter by talking to Luigi atop a skyscraper in New Donk City. Balloon World lets you hide balloons within stages that other players must race to find, and conversely, you can compete while racing to find other balloons hidden by players from across the globe--everyone's performances are ranked online.
The update will also introduce three new costumes: a Super Mario Sunshine-themed shirt and glasses, a musician costume, and a full set of knight armor. Lastly, new snapshot filters for the photo mode will also come with the update, including one that lets you create your own gold-tinted Mario coin pic.

For a free update that's not bad I guess.

Re: Super Mario Odyssey
I was just refamiliarizing myself with this game's controls and I like how there's an action guide to help with that. Unfortunately it seems some moves are motion control only. Really? Really Nintendo?
I assume it's possible to play through in handheld mode without the use of some of these moves (otherwise why would they allow it) but it is still a bad call on their part.

Re: Super Mario Odyssey
The only thing I think is mandatorily motion-controlled is throwing Cappy up or down. The spin can be done by rotating the control stick.
I played almost the entire game in handheld mode and had 0 problems.

You'll need the motion moves of several captured enemies for some Moons later on.

Re: Super Mario Odyssey
I've just passed New Donk City. This game has gradually grown on me. I've never disliked it but now I can really appreciate it. It may not reach the heights of other Mario games but it's really fun and has some cool ideas.
Does anyone else think Mario is too slippery though? I don't think his traction is that great, I feel like he's kinda got that Luigi physics thing in SMO.
