Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

This game will be a Switch port of Mario Kart 8 with some new features, including:
  • New characters, including Bowser Jr., Dry Bones, King Boo, and Splatoon's Inklings (boy or girl, also with selectable colors).
  • New vehicles.
  • A proper Battle Mode. New stages include Battle Stadium, Urchin Underpass (based off of Splatoon), SNES Battle Course 1, and GCN Luigi's Mansion. Double Dash's Bob-omb Blast mode will also be available alongside Balloon Battle.
  • New items, including the long-absent Feather and Boo.
  • Racers can now carry two items at once, similar to Double Dash. The Double Item Box from Double Dash is also returning.
  • A new "Smart Steering" option for beginners, which makes driving easier and helps prevent you from going offroad.
It will include all of MK8's features, including DLC. It's set for an April 28 release.

Seems cool... but I'm not sure there are enough new features yet to convince me to buy a port of a game I already own.

It needs more to be "Deluxe." A proper Battle Mode is only fixing what was broken so I hardly consider that an addition, more of a patch. Otherwise it's just more DLC and easy mode steering.

The double items thing is cool though. Maybe they'll tweak the camera a bit, hopefully.

so it's basically a Game of the Year edition of Mario Kart 8, it looks like

Me getting this game or not is all gonna depend on what happens after I graduate this semester. If I stick in Milwaukee and live in the same place where my roommate has a Wii U/MK8, I'm not gonna feel the need to get this. If I move back home or into a different place with a different roommate who doesn't have a Wii U/MK8, I'll probably pick this up when I get a Switch.
and that's the waaaaaaaaaay the news goes

Inklings are a cool roster addition. I wouldn't buy this if I already had MK8, but since I don't I'm definitely considering it.

Apart from the new battle courses, there will be no new racetracks. Deluxe will come with all 48 of MK8's tracks, including DLC.

So that kind of stinks. I know MK8 is already loaded with more racetracks than any other game in the series, and adding even more might be going a little overboard. But for someone who already owns the original game, this limits the appeal of the port for me.

I'm wondering if Deluxe's online multiplayer will be compatible with the Wii U version's, or if they'll be locked out from each other.

Pretty sure this game is just marketed toward people who didn't get the WiiU version. Only way it makes sense IMO.

I sincerely hope it's possible for them to have multiplayer compatibility, but who knows?

I sincerely hope local multiplayer works like MKDS. Portable Mario Kart games seem to do pretty damn well.

I bet it won't play with Wii U and actually anticipate that version's online to be coming to an end relatively soon.

If they at least let you do download play with other NS owners that would be a cool fearure.

My original reaction to this was that it was a bit crap, but considering how badly the Wii U tanked, I actually think it's a pretty sound business move to port a popular game loads of potential customers (like me) missed even if they're not adding much. Less sure that holding it back almost two months post-launch is helping that strategy, but I get what they're trying to do.

Would be nice if they added more courses.
