Coming out in June this year for the Switch.

Some of the new features displayed:
  • A fifth style based off of Super Mario 3D World.
  • At least three new level themes (desert, snow, and jungle).
  • Two different grades of slope.
  • New objects including clear pipes, bouncy mushroom platforms, crates, and ! Blocks.
  • The Super Bell item (as the SM3DW style's unique powerup).
  • New enemies including Ant Trooper, Porcupuffer, Banzai Bill, Piranha Creeper, Skipsqueak, Stingby, Hop-Chop, Bully, Angry Sun, Fire Bro., and Boom Boom.
  • The ability to customize water level, or the route of autoscrolling stages.
  • Other doodads such as ON/OFF Switches, tornadoes, parachutes, Snake Blocks, wobbly platforms, etc.
Damn it, now I have to buy a Switch.

It looks great, especially slopes. I didn't know the first didn't have Angry Sun, how can modern generations have nightmares?

They're not just porting SMM and adding features, then calling it SMM2? I mean I don't care but that's what I assumed the bulk of this was (it's all new to me anyway).

I mean, the base game and concept is the same, but it's apparently to be beefed up enough to achieve sequel status.

^^NSMBU Deluxe just added an extra powerup & pallet-swapped a Toad who can use it; everything else was already present in NSMBU/NSLU. Port.
SMM 2 is adding an entirely new mode of play (3D Land/Cat Bell), as well as new mechanics added to the previous modes. Sequel.

I think in the case of a creation engine like SMM it's just inherently easier to label something as a sequel rather than a port.

yeah the development of the series in inherently iterative, its hard to take something like "mario maker" and go in a completely different direction with it.

that said, considering how much new content is in the game that drastically alters the experiences you will have, as well as having an entirely redesigned creation interface, i would totally feel comfortable calling this a sequel

Some of the new features in the game:
- Slopes (two different grades)
- Angry Sun
- Snake Blocks (two different speeds)
- On/Off Switches (can toggle blocks, tracks, conveyors, maybe more?)
- Seesaws
- Swinging Claws
- Changeable water level (the level can be static, or it can move up and down at a speed of your choice; this can also be done with lava)
- Custom scrollling
- Vertical Sub-areas
- Scroll stop (building a solid wall that spans the height of the level will stop scrolling beyond that point)
- Banzai Bill
- Dry Bones Shell (allows your to float in water/lava, or "crumble up" to avoid danger)
- Big Coins (in 10, 30, and 50 coin denominations)
- New sound effects
- Co-op stage creation (local only)
- Clear conditions for stages
- Twistesr
- Icicles
- Diagonal Conveyors
- Red Yoshi (spits fireballs a la Super Mario World.
- Parachutes
- Boom Boom
- Sideways Thwomps
- Story Mode (100+ Nintendo-created levels)
- Desert, Snow, Forest, and Sky level themes (all with new music composed by Koji Kondo)
- Night theme (turns levels dark and adds new challenges)

The Super Mario 3D World game style has some features that are unique to it:
- Clear Pipes
- Crates
- Warp Boxes
- Spike Blocks
- ! Blocks
- Blinking Blocks
- Track Blocks
- Mushroom Trampolines
- Piranha Creeper
- Skipsqueak
- Koopa Troopa Car
- Charvaargh
- Pom Pom
- And more..?

As for the online:
- Level tags and detailed online search (THANK YOU NINTENDO)
- Miiverse-style level comments (commenting can be enabled or disabled by the creator)
- Customizable Mii profile (with unlockable outfits and accessories)
- Endless Challenge (like the 100 Mario Challenges, but endless)
- Four player multiplayer (both co-op and competitive modes)
- Local co-op rooms

And finally, the Super Mario Maker 2 Invitational will be held on June 8, so mark your calendars.

I played the first one near the end of its lifespan. I'm excited to play this one closer to the beginning!
