Re: Overshadowed Video Game Music
Turns out I listen to the Persona soundtracks a lot.
20. Persona 5 - Is it Boring?
I'm as guilty as everyone else of listening to "Rivers in the Desert", "Life will Change", and "Last Surprise" on rotation instead of digging into the rest of the OST, but it's almost all great.

I'm just gonna keep posting CT here.
21. Chrono Trigger - "Guardia Castle"
I feel like RPG castle music in general tends to get overlooked even when it's really good.

"Rivers in the Desert" has such a hot beat.I am nobody wrote: ↑Fri Jan 05, 2018 5:05 pmI'm as guilty as everyone else of listening to "Rivers in the Desert", "Life will Change", and "Last Surprise" on rotation instead of digging into the rest of the OST, but it's almost all great.
To highlight less popular pieces, I like "Break it Down" and "Life Goes On"

22. Mega Man 3 - Wily Stage 3
If anyone tells you to listen to Wily stage music from an NES Mega Man game, it is almost a guarantee that it’s not this one. Which is a shame, because this one is fantastic.

25. Super Mario Odyssey - "Peronza Plaza"
ML mentioned Odyssey on the last page, but here's one he didn't include. This is my favorite town theme, and in my opinion one of the best tracks in the game.

While this is not keeping in the format of the thread, I would heartily recommend any soundtracks to Sunsoft games on the NES. Their work is frequently passed over for crowd-favorite companies which still exist as functioning businesses, and yet Sunsoft had almost inarguably the most advanced use of the NES' abilities, and routinely went out of their way to expand the audio functions of the system for their games. They actually wrote complex sample engines which actually would swap instrument samples out of the audio channel on the fly to use multiple drum and chord strikes in a single song.

The Megaman X series is known for its frequently stellar sound tracks, even the absolute worst games in the series (X6 and X7) have incredible musical scores. In all that great-ness the most unloved track by far is the Sigma Stage 2 theme from X5.
https://youtu.be/vOpQoAqTTpc
Perhaps it's because of how unfitting it in terms of story, or how far along it is in game but this track is **** AWESOME!

26. Muramasa: the Demon Blade- Jorogumo
Pretty sure I remember Muramasa gaining some popularity on the Wii when it came out. Even if it didn't that was a spot on the Hollywood Walk of Fame compared to what publicity it got on the Vita, which is a shame because this and all future versions had four mini-stories each with a different gameplay style. This also meant more songs and they definitely meet the standard of the original game.

Theme from Super Mario 3D World:
https://youtu.be/L3k2B2hSl7A
I think this is more overshadowed just based on how much great music is in the Mario series. But besides "Jump Up Superstar" from Odyssey and maybe the original theme song, this might be my favorite piece of music from the entire series.

Jump Up Superstar couldn't be more overrated, at least as a Mario song. Just doesn't fit.

Re: Overshadowed Video Game Music
Much as Donkey Kong Country 3 is an overshadowed game, its music is itself overshadowed by the musical masterpice that was its predecessor. I can't say I stand by the entire soundtrack, but it does have some moments of brilliance. Here's "Cascade Capers":

Other recommended songs: "Treetop Trumble", "Rockface Rumble", "Jungle Jitter", "Cavern Caprise".

This theme from Sands of Destruction, while the entire OST can count.

So. Probably not a lot of you people have heard of this game (aside from furry trash like me) it has some people with pretty impressive track records like Masato Kato and Yasunori Mitsuda.
Suffice to say... Mitsuda's songs carry the game.

^ Mitsuda is why I have that game on my "someday I'll check it out" list at all. How's the game itself?

I’ve lost track of the number, but

The Atma Weapon battle is a great song that doesn’t get enough love.

Speaking of FFXIV, when everyone talks about that soundtrack they always bring up "Answers", "Dragonsong", "Ultima", or "Heroes". One that no one ever mentions and is a personal favorite of mine is "Penitus"

"Through the Trees" from Shantae: Risky's Revenge.
https://youtu.be/3z6aw5RnxGY
"Burning Town" is the most well known recurring theme in the Shantae series, and rightfully so, but this relaxing-yet-melancholy piece of semi-ambient music is absolutely lovely.
