Been watching Family Guy (you'd think they'd mock Muhammad and Muslims once after decades of going after Jesus and Christians, but they got no nuts) but an acquaintance insists that I give Hunter x Hunter another shot. It is by the guy who did Yu Yu Hakusho so it should be good but half a dozen episodes in I was still bored. I kinda just hate story heavy media about little kids, with very few exceptions like Dragon Ball. He says it starts slow, and that is for damn sure.

FDSLJKFJLSLFJDJLKFJSJFDDFKS Y'ALL

Twitter informed me today that there was a One Piece OVA animated by Production I.G. that came out before Toei's serialization. There was a clip posted and the way Luffy was animated just...... he actually looked and acted like a man made out of rubber, it was communicated so WELL visually in a way that the series has never been able to capture that well. I was able to find a totally legal source to purchase and legally view this old OVA, and watched the whole thing.

It was just over the length of a standard episode, like 30 minutes, but I was so blown away! It just felt so.... fresh. It was weird hearing different voice actors and just seeing how the characters were interpreted slightly differently from the same source material. The animation was the best thing: Luffy was animated in such a fresh and charming way it made me fall in love with the series all over again. The soundtrack felt SO different from Toei's (I love Toei's too, but this **** had some WILD fiddle and sax solos) and it just.... oh my god it just made me wish we could see this much life breathed into the series now. We just have these 30 minutes and that's it.

The story is fine, pretty standard One Piece stuff, but it did a great job of communicating character dynamics and everything and important themes in such a short time. A fantastic advertisement of the manga and a great introduction. Every single episode of One Piece I'm gonna watch and think about what could've been, though.

I know a serialized weekly anime is different from a one-off OVA but this is just another example of why the weekly episode formula is ****. But it makes them so much money they'll never stop. BUT THINGS JUST LOOK SO MUCH BETTER WHEN ANIMATORS HAVE TIME TO ANIMATE!!!! That aside, though, there are inherent things about how the manga was interpreted that came through differently, and just overall this version felt more charming to me.

Sigh

Been rewatching 'Archer'. Man, what a great series.

Haven't seen a new ep since S5E1.

(Aside from S8E7, of course.)

I watched the 90's SMB movie for the first time since I was REALLY young. All I remembered about it was that I was hoping it would be a movie somewhat resembling the games, and that it definitely was not, and I was really disappointed and confused, and that there was a part at the beginning where one dinosaur goes "you know it just don't get no better'n dis" and another dinosaur goes "yeah". All the discourse about Sonic and Detective Pikachu made me want to re-watch it out of sheer curiosity.

I am so glad I did. That movie is WILD. I had no idea Aunt Petunia's actress was in it but I lost my **** when I saw her. It was just completely ridiculous from start to finish; virtually every costuming choice in the ~*~reptile world~*~ is magnificent. Also.... yes that is definitely exactly how evolution works. I can only imagine biologists and/or paleontologists watching this movie and dying inside.

THE GOOMBAS ARE THE MOST LEGENDARY DESIGN CHOICE IN CINEMATIC HISTORY BTW. I DON'T KNOW WHY THAT ONE HAS A HARMONICA BUT I DON'T QUESTION THESE THINGS

It came out the same year as Jurassic Park so I wonder if everyone was just really ****ing into dinosaurs then??? or what. Anyway it was a ride. I honestly wish people would stop comparing Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog to it (I too was guilty of this) because there is no way either of those will be this **** great. 100000/10

I think Harmonica Goomba was supposed to be the de-evolved version of Guitar-playing Toad, wasn't he? like they let him keep a consolation instrument :D

anyways yeah SMB is an A+ movie, set design and effects are at that wonderful early 90s pre-"everything should be CGI"-attitude zenith. it's absolutely ridiculous and the plot and dialogue are unbelievably dumb but damn if it's not fun as hell to watch

I love how simultaneously brick-stupid and clever 'Archer' is. In the S8E7, whilst car-crushing Barry, Archer screams 'Eat a dick, Gort!'. It's a tremendous reference.

detective pikachu was so bad you guys im like actually in awe of just how bad it was

it was a bad detective movie, and it was a bad pokemon movie. i could forgive its writing if it felt like it was being a kids' movie, because kids' mystery writing is usually awful, but the whole thing felt so obviously geared towards millennials and our nostalgia that i can't give it a pass for that. the plot had actually ****-all to do with pokemon, because Hollywood is incapable of adapting anything without making it boring generic sci-fi. the only pokemon that mattered are all gen 1 which i'm already burned out on, but i mean it's pikachu centric so what do you expect. it was a ryan reynolds movie, not a pokemon movie, and it was not a particularly good one of those either.

Spoiler.
I called the stupid dad plot twist as soon as possessed Mewtwo started swapping bodies around but I still laughed my ass off at just how dumb it was. THE MOVIE OFFICIALLY WASN'T EVEN ABOUT A TRAINER AND A POKEMON. IT WAS JUST PROTAG KUN AND HIS DAD JFDSLKJFDLSJJLDFS YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS **** UP

that all said i was definitely entertained. 2/10 movie 7/10 entertainment

...so would it have been better if it were the hard R noir version? You know, Pikachu going after child prostitution rings in Little Tokyo, set in the 1950s?

I get Dragon Ball Super with Hulu so I thought I'd give it a try, but I kind of hated it. I didn't make it through the first episode. Like, I watched Beerus destroy a planet with one finger because he only mostly loved the food he was served and something about that struck me as such a stupid and uninteresting introduction to a villain that I wasn't willing to give it any more of my time.

i have mixed feelings about super. i hate the aesthetics, i hate how skinny everyone is, i hate what they did to videl, i hate how no one has aged and no one looks old or frumpy and everyone feels like a hyper-tropey version of themselves. i also pretty much hate what they did with the future trunks arc.

that said, there have been lots of good slice-of-life comedy moments and some fun space adventure worldbuilding, plus despite everything i hated about the future trunks arc i have to say it was a **** dream come true seeing him again. ALSO zamasu was a cool villain. so like. it's cool. but it's nowhere near on z levels of being a quality anime, and i prefer GT by an enormous landslide as a proper sequel and follow-up/resolution.

~~

last thing i watched was a bunch of X-Files because my roommate has been bingeing it. i was only half paying attention but i love how 90's it is. THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE
