Favorite retro/classic video game soundtrack?

Post by nerofire68 » Thu Feb 23, 2017 7:24 pm

This is a topic I always like to start with because you can get an idea of what kinds of games people played as well as their taste in music. You can choose any kind of music that comes from a retro game. I think most games prior to 1996 classify as this but I don't know the true rule on the matter.

Anyways, this is mine:

Persona 2: Innocent Sin is by far my favorite "dated" OST, but it's from 1999 so it probably doesn't count. So DKC2, with an honorable mention to Sonic 2.

I really like the music in 'Blast Corps'. But, then, I just kind of really like 'Blast Corps' in general.

Good old Cromlech Court. Who doesn't like Cromlech Court.

GoldenEye: 007 soundtrack is awesome. As is The World is Not Enough. Actually, most of the Bond games had good scores. The title music for the original games (Nightfire, Everything or Nothing, etc) were total crap. But the actual scores were great.

^Ooh, 'Goldeneye'. Graeme Norgate worked on that straight off 'Blast Corps'. Good biz.

...dunno who specifically to credit for the rad jazzy elevator-music version of the Bond theme (potentially Norgate, Kirkhope or Beanland)--------whoever it was deserves a medal, at any rate.

A lot of my favorites have already been named, but I want to give a special shout out to:

Ecco The Dolphin 2: The Tides of Time

I adore its soundtrack. So much so that I'll play the game for the music.

Mega Man X, Sonic 2, and Mega Man 2 come to mind right away, but I know I'm forgetting a slew of favorites.

Personally, I think Jet Grind Radio is the perfect OST because it fits the ethos of the game SO well but I know that's not quite retro yet.

Oh snap, I just realized that nobody talked about final fantasy 4.

"Battle of the four fiends" was an awesome boss theme to fight to.

FF in general has good music.

Donkey Kong Country 2, Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger are three of my favorite games of all time, and have some of the best soundtracks I've ever listened to.

[spoiler][MEDIA=youtube]96wnpkcZIYw[/MEDIA][/spoiler][DOUBLEPOST=1489444172,1489443987][/DOUBLEPOST]Honorable mentions include Super Metroid, Super Mario RPG, Yoshi's Island, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy X, and Mega Man 7 are great, the latter two having the best soundtracks in their respective series IMO.

No way is Final Fantasy X's battle music better than 7's[DOUBLEPOST=1489644452,1489644407][/DOUBLEPOST]overall soundtrack I guess I'd give the edge to X, but FFVII has the best battle themes in the series[DOUBLEPOST=1489644507][/DOUBLEPOST]I mean zelda is literally iconic tho too

but that's the obvious one

FF7's basic battle theme might edge out FFX's but overall it's a loss for it IMO.

Neither FFX nor FFVII have "The Decisive Battle" or "Man with the Machine Gun", so I'm afraid you're both wrong.

Machine Gun is great but c'mon, Decisive Battle is just "good."

I'd have to say the original Legend of Zelda, Even though it's a hugely known game, I just like the legend of Zelda. :D
