How long does retro go?

What do you consider the cut-off point for retro? I say the PS1.

That's probably about right, at least until the point when modern graphics become so different from PS2/GCN/Dreamcast that's the latter comes to be recognized as a distinct style (and I don't think we're terribly far off from that either).

I used to consider it two generations back (NES started being retro for N64/PSX era, SNES/Genesis was retro for PS2/GC/Xbox/DC era), but there's no way I'd consider PS2/Xbox/GC/DC to be retro right now, even though they came out like 15 years ago. So PSX/N64 sounds about right.
and that's the waaaaaaaaaay the news goes

It's relative to people. For me it would be Dreamcast. For teenagers a 360 could be entering retro status at this point.

It won't be long until GameCube, Xbox, and PS2 are considered retro.

If the generation before it is finished then it's retro.

Meaning Gamecube, PS2, Xbox for the moment.

I really don't care about what's considered "retro" anymore

there are kids in high school that were born after the PS2/GC/XBox, welcome to old age

There are teenagers to whom 9/11 is merely history, like Pearl Harbor. That definitely makes me old since I was a teenager when it happened.

There are kids out there today who were born after the Sega Genesis came out. Can you believe that?

Wait, that's my generation. ****.

I mentioned pay phones, and a kid did not know what they are. They also did not know about phones attached to the receiver with a cord that you would have to sit near to use.

Nothing past the N64 or PS1 is retro. They are too new, even if they came out in 2001 or so.

Payphones still exist. Kids probably just look at them as mysterious objects.

There used to be more of them. I barely see them. No one needs them since everyone has a cell phone.

After the N64/PS1 era computer games got a much better footing, so it's hard to consider the era afterwards retro necessarily. But I suppose a lot of people could see it as retro if they have a lot of nostalgia for it. It's a really subjective question.

They should remain for emergency use and convenience, though. Cells die, or break, and not everyone has a phone.

Around my town we still have enough of them but I'm sure they're disappearing.

I would say having a cell phone in your pocket is more likely than having quarters on hand at this point. I haven't actually seen a pay phone in a long time.

This all reminds me of how almost every professor I had in uni made a "VCRs existed" joke.

btw, my personal answer is everything before the DC. I think RU hit the nail on the head.

You don't need quarters to make emergency phone calls, and cell phones can die or glitch out. I also read they can create complications in locating a person whereas that is not an issue on payphones or even landlines.
