I feel like that's a fact that comes up every now and then, and I know it, but it still makes me think "huh...".

Pandas have slitted, catlike pupils, rather than round ones like other bears.

The reason we have special names for eleven and twelve (rather than something like oneteen and twoteen), and the reason there are 24 hours in a day and 12 inches in a foot, is because these carry over from cultures/times where people counted in a base 12 system rather than a base 10 system because they based their counting on the segments of the 4 fingers on one hand - of which there are twelve total - rather than the 5 digits of both hands.

I learned a lot about math today. It's fascinating to me how notation and base ten are culturally subjective but other aspects of numbers, like irrationality and divisibility, are inherent properties.

Now I can't stop thinking about a potential world where 10 means twelve and 20 means twenty-four (except we wouldn't call it that, because that name is from a base ten system), and 16 is a nice even number but 5 is a weirdo like 7 that barely goes into anything nicely. ****'s mind blowing. MATH, DUDES.

In medieval Europe, maps were often drawn with East at the top, rather than North. This is how the word "orient" came to mean "face the correct direction".

^We have an east-oriented map of Israel in one of our classrooms here. It really throws you off the first time you see it.

In a 1917 letter to Winston Churchill, Admiral John Fisher used the phrase "O.M.G."

Hamsters have monochromatic vision, and cannot discriminate colors at all.
