Glad to find out that's been cleared up.

Eww. Bet they were, the loathesome pervs.
Incidentally, why does everyone and his grandmother say 'Lion King' is 'Hamlet'? It so, so isn't. The only thing 'Hamlet'-esque about 'Lion King' is the royal fratricide angle.
If there's any of Shakespeare in 'Lion King', it's 'Henry IV' and 'Henry V'. Simba starts out as crummy irresponsible Prince Hal, fooling around with his dirtbag friends (Timon and Pumbaa make a pretty good Falstaff, Bardolph, Pistol and Nym-----------shame neither of them dies horribly in the Disney flick), then eventually matures into rough tough violent Agincourt-ass King Henry. All his reclaiming of the Pridelands was missing was a 'Non Nobis' chorus.

The stems of "helicopter" are not heli and copter, but are actually helico (Greek hélix, "spiral") and pter (Greek pterón, "wing").

The Japanese word for diabetes is 糖尿病 (tounyoubyou), which literally translates to "sugar pee disease." That is a much more generally useful name than "diabetes."

^ ...what's your definition of 'much more useful'?
'Diabetes' has English derivatives. Presumably saying 'I'm a diabetic' would be a pretty good course of action in any medical emergency. Also 'sugar pee disease' isn't terribly specific. One could call syphilis 'yucky wiener disease', but that wouldn't be much help in differentiating it from herpes or HIV.

"Diabetes" are only useful terms provided you've previously had the word defined to you. Even if you spoke Greek and could identify its source ("siphon"), you're not going to figure out anything about it. The full name requires you to also know Latin and even then only gets you to "siphon sweet", which is still pretty meaningless.
"Sugar pee disease" at least tells you it's a disease that results in sugary urine, and you could figure that out even if you're six. You turn it into "diabetic" by appending 者 (sha), which makes words refer to a person. I don't disagree that it would be difficult to differentiate diseases with names like that if you didn't already know said names, but you'd at least know they were all somewhat related. Good luck telling diabetes and herpes apart from their names.
HIV, incidentally, is a very useful name. "Immunodeficiency" is maybe a bit big for a six year old, but I imagine most adults could figure out it's a virus that severely weakens your immune system.

"Kid gloves" are gloves made of kid (i.e., young goat) leather that are exceptionally soft and thin, and are used for handling objects without leaving any trace, hence the phrase "using kid gloves", which refers to handling something carefully or delicately. The phrase has absolutely nothing to do with "kids" as in "human children".

No word is useful before you know what it means. This seems, to me, to be an arbitrary distinction.I am nobody wrote: ↑Fri Apr 06, 2018 5:54 pm"Diabetes" are only useful terms provided you've previously had the word defined to you.[/i]

That's just not true. If you've never heard the word "firefighter" and someone tells you they're one, you're still going to be able to tell that they're a person who fights fires. Or, like I said before, you can figure out the effect of HIV if someone tells you the full name. See also every other compound word.Booyakasha wrote: ↑Sat Apr 07, 2018 3:15 amNo word is useful before you know what it means. It isn't a massive difference, no, but I don't see why it's controversial to say that it's generally better to have some idea of what a word means the first time you hear it than none.

I find the 'compound word' argument uncompelling, because there are no rules at all for how compound words function.

Re: "What did you learn today?" doesn't have a clever title this time.
Well, that's English's fault, isn't it? Japanese very rarely does that - if a word says it's a sugar pee disease, it is almost definitely a sugar pee disease. Or a body temperature measure. Or a flying machine. And so on.
At any rate, I have no idea why we're even arguing about this unless you thought I meant we should replace "diabetes" with "sugar pee disease" in English, which I didn't. It's a more useful word in the context of its language.
To get back on topic, there were 560,000 violent deaths globally in 2016. About 381,000 (68%) of those people were murdered and 101,000 (18%) died in wars. Which isn't to downplay the horror of wars, obviously, but that's a lot of murders.

I don't know why you're arguing about this. I'm arguing because I'm a tireless pedant and quibbler.

Quibble sounds like a British board game or something.
Only 381k murders in a whole year worldwide? With billions and billions of stupid, violent humans and many hellhole countries that seems miraculously low. Something like 1k per day, 5 per country if my **** math is anywhere near right.

Asian elephants are more closely related to woolly mammoths than they are to African elephants.
