Found out that the guy who voices Glomgold in the new Ducktales also voiced Reaper from Overwatch and Bloo from Foster's Home.

Keith Ferguson has range.

Yeah, how dare they try to be sensitive to minorities. Truly a disgrace. I think games should be more racist, actually.

That's not what I meant, and you know it.

A few feathers isn't racist.

I think if you look into this claim a little deeper, you’ll find otherwise.

A reminder that this is all over a single frame of animation in reference to a game made in the 80's.

Native Americans have a lot of problems and I'm fairly certain Mr. Game and Watch is at the low end of their radar, if they don't support him having them at all. Same goes for issues with censorship when it doesn't change the game in even the slightest. Trend or not, I can come up with way worse instances of content removal that hurt the game purely to prevent offense.

Don't any of you pretend you'd boycott the game over this.

Imagine if schools put as much money toward improving education as they do toward football teams.

Man, you change gears fast, don't you? Well, it gets the topic moving.

Actually, expand that even further out. Imagine if states put as much money toward improving infrastructure as they do towards football teams? Our roleplaying group had a whole conversation about football teams either being bad for states because the local governments bend over far too much for them, or good because they encourage tourism which is flat out necessary for some cities to continue on. It was really interesting.

A few things here. First, I never said I'd boycott the game. I fully intend on buying it, and I would have even if that imagery was still in there. Second, it's not just a single frame of animation, but was also included as one of the games "spirits." Third, (and this isn't necessarily directed at you, Tazy), this isn't censorship. Nobody's free speech is being infringed upon here.

Something that a lot of people forget is that it is completely acceptable to both like something and hold it to high standards. There's nothing wrong with with examining something I like, identifying something that could be done better or treated more sensitively, and still continuing to like the thing. I'm a big football fan, so I've needed to have this conversation with myself many times.

The game is better for having the imagery removed, and absolutely nothing would have been gained if it were kept in there.

this. i think there are a lot of misconceptions floating around about what free speech and censorship actually ARE. like censorship would be somebody's voice or artistic expression being forcibly erased, but this is a revision nintendo is making themselves. maybe not a decision the dev team would have made, but i doubt that feather is something they feel strongly enough about to fight.

people have a vested interest in this controversy because it represents "the strongarm of social activism interfering with games development" or whatever but if you really look at it for what it is, you're kidding yourself to think anything of any real value was lost.

"censorship" can be used correctly outside of government/legal contexts. for example, when localizing nes games for western audiences, Nintendo censored several religious or other potentially controversial themes. not to speak to or take away from anyone's particular point, just wanted to throw that out there.

Oh, I see. The game it's referencing was about defending a fort from Native Americans.

Now I understand why people are upset.

^Yeah, sorry VGA, we were talking about the issue without full context. No worries.

I feel like the action of censoring is different from the concept of censorship, though. The latter implies something wider and more systemic.

i dont think its so much the form of the word as the context that surrounds it. like a guy saying "this censorship will not stand!!" in reference to a company making its game less racist should be told to dude get an effin grip, of course.

Right, that’s why I distinguished between the action and the concept. Maybe my italics were misleading there
