A stressful 90 minutes but it works. Made it out of the Group of Death; **** you, haters.

A win over Ghana, a tie (that was seconds from being a win) against Portugal, and a 0-1 loss against Germany. Advancing is totally deserved. Although our guys looked toast today with the exception of that one moment in stoppage time.

Was about to comment on how Belgium/South Korea was really one sided, and then Belgium got a red. Interesting.

South Korea's doing well. And that was a nice save from Courtois.

Yeah, that red card... But we still have hope!

^ I'm not sure, but if we lost I think we had to face Germany. Germany is strong...

Actually, I don't get the whole set-up. :P

My new go-to World Cup jam. It may be a German team video, but it's about America and Jurgen Klinsmann is in it (he's the one with long blonde hair at the 1 minute mark)

Can I rant about US pop culture bitching about flopping? We just finished the NBA and NHL playoffs which are American leagues notorious for flopping and diving. But because soccer is international it's okay to call these guys out for being little bitches since they fall to the ground.

Nevermind that soccer players are sprinting miles for two straight 45-minute periods without formal timeouts.

Nevermind that sprinting and getting tackled will knock the wind out of you.

Nevermind that getting full-speed kicked in the shin **** hurts, and it's worse when kicked with cleats.

Nevermind that most of the time, despite ALL THAT, they do get up and keep playing.

Nope, these guys are PANSIES and should MAN UP. This coming from a population of people who don't do enough physical activity themselves.

So aggravating. Yes, some players and teams (*coughBRAZILcough*) do put the theatrics on, but this World Cup hasn't been bad IMO. But who cares? It's trendy to make fun of all the flopping regardless!

(There's that dumb chart going around showing total "injury" time on the ground for each team. It fails to note actual injuries, like Dempsey getting his nose kicked in and Jozy pulling his hamstring. Arrrrrgh.)

The US hates flopping in general. Soccer's reputation when it comes to flopping is worse than it should be but from the first part of your post you make it seem that Americans are like totally cool with flopping in the NBA and stuff.

I think at this point the NBA might even have a worse reputation for flopping than soccer. One of the reasons people hate the Heat so much aside from general James hate, The Decision, the fact that Erik Spoelstra's face just makes you want to punch him, etc. is that Wade, James, Battier, and the like are notorious floppers. I searched "LeBron flop" on youtube and there were something like 70,000 results.

No, no, I know Americans aren't cool with flopping. I just think it's hypocritical to condemn an entire sport over (perceived) flopping when you just wasted hours watching "your" sport do the same thing.

I also have little tolerance for people who rag on athletes for leg injuries. It's clear those people have never done anything athletic in their lives, because let me tell you, as someone who has been leg-injury-prone since high school, that ****'s no joke. When your leg cramps or ankle twists or worse you literally cannot move. (I had to leave an Ultimate game early on Monday because I landed wrong after a jump and sprained my ankle pretty terribly. I wanted to keep playing but I physically could not.)

Then there are some people who complain Americans don't flop and missing chances (at soccer matches).

^^ I get what you mean. I think flopping is a general scapegoat for other reasons why people don't like soccer along with "it's boring." Sometimes they have a point. There are some boring ass soccer games, but they're no less boring than watching a football game where both teams end up punting on every possession or a major blowout. Dismissing the sport completely because of the occasional boring game or flopping is silly. I thought you were just talking about general complaints about flopping, because I myself complain about flopping a lot.

And I completely agree with you on the playing through pain thing. Sometimes your body just tells you "no." People always cite the Jordan flu game, Tiger Woods winning the U.S. Open with a torn ACL, or Isiah Thomas' 25-point quarter that he played on basically one foot. But those are incredibly rare instances in performances by the greatest athletes of all time. Sometimes you can play through the pain and other times you can't. I've played through football games where I was sick or I twisted my ankle, but there were other times I was sick or I was cramping up that I literally couldn't go on. I mean, I'm not a professional athlete (I'm actually incredibly unathletic but **** IT I PLAY SPORTS ANYWAY) but sometimes the adrenaline rush just isn't high enough for you to play through it. Plus if you rest you don't have as much of a chance of it happening again.

For anyone who doesn't know how the bracket gets set up:
Image
1A = 1st place team in Group A
2A = 2nd place team in Group A
1B = 1st place team in Group B
2B = 2nd place team in Group B
etc, etc.

I know people who follow soccer yearly, and they still didn't know how the bracket works.
