^It's a good book, and also a pretty good wakeup call.

...jeez. The Bismarck, man. I already knew how messed that whole situation was. But the book made it more real.

Like... the Germans did a one-in-a-zillion shot that destroyed the Hood, the pride of the British navy, in one hit. Nailed her perfectly right in the ammo battery, and it blew her up six ways from sunday. Even them hardass German gunners were evidently horrified to see the Hood go down with all hands. It must have been pretty goldang sobering.

Read Weapons of Mass Diplomacy (originally published as Quai D'Orsay) by Abel Lanzac and Christophe Blain, which tells a semi-fictionalized account of the French Foreign Ministry's actions in the lead-up to the Iraq War. I got this book without having ever heard about it before, and I ended up really loving it. It was both fascinating (I can't say I knew a whole lot about the inner workings of diplomatic bureaus before I read this book) and hilarious.

Decided to list books I've read at the end of each week instead of spamming the thread. I've been on a graphic novel binge lately, so there's going to be a lot.

Batman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland. A shining example of why Batman needs to make exceptions to his "no killing" rule.

Why Geography Matters: More Than Ever by Harm de Blij. An illuminating (and honestly kind of pessimistic) outline of important world affairs, how geography is necessary to a complete understanding of them, and why voters need to know this ****.

Not the Israel My Parents Promised Me by Harvey Pekar and JT Waldman. It's basically "here's an overview of the history of the Jewish people and the state of Israel, and my opinions about it" with a bland and somewhat pointless frame narrative about the author and artist talking about making this book. The art is nothing to write home about. The historical stuff was informative, at least.

Best of Enemies: Part One by Jean-Pierre Filiu and David B. An interesting chronicle of the relationship between the United States and the Middle East, from 1783 up to 1953. There are two more books in the series, which I'm looking forward to reading.

Books read in 2018 (26/52):
Spoiler.
1. DK Books 5th Edition First Aid Manual - 4/5 (Jan 16)
2. Octopus Pie Vol. 4 by Meredith Gran - 5/5 (Jan 18)

I've been forgetting to post here.

Dunno if courses should really count, but I could've read it as a book, so #3 is Understanding Japan: A Cultural History. It obviously had to be something of survey given that it had 12 hours to cover approximately 1,500 years, but given that constraint it was absolutely phenomenal.

#4 was Adnan's Story, which is basically Serial as told by a family friend. It's obviously solidly in the innocent camp given their relationship, and the author makes a convincing argument, but she also spends far too much time on irrelevant side stories, to the extent that a good 20 minutes are spent on some random woman's dream. It can still be pretty powerful once you start to consider what everyone involved has had to go through for 20 years, though.

#5 was Red Notice. It's about the Magnitsky murder, which I knew only vague details about because of the eponymous US law. It takes a while to get going, but the long intro is necessary context for why the Russian state came to hate the author so much, but it's ultimately absolutely shocking. We've all heard the numbers about the depth of the corruption in Russia, the simultaneous pettiness and ruthlessness of the state, and the horrific condition of the justice system, but they all hit much harder when you understand what it means for the victims.

Currently reading 'Tales of Watership Down', the sequel to the original book.

"Speedwell's Story" made me laugh myself stupid. It's so dingdong silly. Good old Speedwell, man.

Best of Enemies: Part Two by Jean-Pierre Filiu & David B. Covers the years 1953 through 1984. Again, very interesting and informative. Will be checking out the third volume soon.

Just read 'Giant Spider and Me, Vol 1'. Postapocalyptic manga story about, well, a twelve-year-old girl who befriends a giant spider. It's odd, but good.

Here's what I've been up to - rereading the original Hitchhiker's Guide series after like fifteen years. Barely remembered so many hilarious details. I was like 14 when I last read them.

1. The Hithchiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams (HELL YEAH! Required reading for any sci-fi reader)
2. The Restaurant at the End of the Universe - Douglas Adams (HELL YEAH! Gets better)
3. Life, the Universe and Everything - Douglas Adams (YEAH! Got way more surreal but still fun)
4. So Long and Thanks for All the Fish - Douglas Adams (YEAH! Probably my least favorite - kind of weak - by all means funny - just weaker compared to the rest)
5. Mostly Harmless - Douglas Adams (HELL YEAH! Honestly I think this is my favorite. Such a shame that this is the last one he wrote. It's so wonderfully written and so goddamn funny. He had a way of elaborating with such stinging British wit that I don't think I've read any other writer after him come close. I recently bought the Eoin Colfer one so I'll see how that goes soon. )

Currently Reading: Ready Player One - Ernest Cline

The Death of Stalin by Fabien Nury and Thierry Robin, which is (surprisingly) about the death of Stalin and the following power struggle in the USSR. Makes for a pretty interesting story. Apparently this was made into a movie recently.

Volume 2 of Hellsing by Kohta Hirano. The story is starting to get a bit more interesting, but I'm still not that into it.

Best of Enemies: Part Three by Jean-Pierre Filiu and David B. Covers the years from 1984 to 2013, when the book was published. Ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, I have to say.

#6. A very Expensive Poisoning: The Assassination of Alexander Litvineko and Putin's War the the West. Pretty much what it says on the tin. Covers the 2006 assassination through the January 2016 conclusion of the inquiry into it, along with other suspected murders and campaigns that occurred in the intervening decade.

Marxism: A Graphic Guide by Rupert Woodfin and Oscar Zarate. An okay overview of a dull subject.

Brazen: Rebel Ladies Who Rocked the World by Pénélope Bagieu. A collection of short biographies of... well, see the subtitle. I liked it a lot.

Woman Rebel: The Margaret Sanger Story by Peter Bagge. I'm not sure if Bagge's cartoony artstyle and odd sense of humor helped or harmed the story.

3. Life, the Universe and Everything - Douglas Adams (YEAH! Got way more surreal but still fun)

He had a way of elaborating with such stinging British wit that I don't think I've read any other writer after him come close. I recently bought the Eoin Colfer one so I'll see how that goes soon. )

6. Ready Player One - Ernest Cline (Okay. The constant fawning over the 80's started to really annoy me not even 100 pages in. But that actually wasn't the worst part. The worst part was the main character being a total creeper on the girl. There's a chapter where he's talking to her online and presses her with questions like SO ARE YOU HOT? ARE YOU A GIRL? ARE YOU A PRETTY GIRL? ARE YOU A GIRL WITH REAL GIRL PARTS?. Like DUDE. No. Stop. Please.)

7. Victor in the Rubble - Alex Finley (HELL YEAH. This book came as a surprise. A friend lent it to me to read. Such a goddamn funny book. Think of Archer except downplaying the raunchy jokes and more like Office Space for spies.)

I tried reading Eoin Colfer's And Another Thing. . .

Could not.

Finish it.

It's so bad.

So awful. Douglas Adams was probably rolling in his grave.

It's a painfully unfunny book. Like 60 pages in and NOTHING has happened yet. The characters are just standing around talking trying to be funny. It reads like fanfiction. Every paragraph Eoin Colfer breaks the narrative by referring to the Guide and it's just not funny. Good thing I only spent $3 on this book.
