Least Favorite or Most Hated Achievements

#1

Post by Bad Dragonite » Thu Sep 13, 2012 12:56 pm

Any of these for you?
Or is there a game you hate the achievements in?

Personally, I don't like the "Beated it on uber harderest mode" achievements, but they make sense and seem to have their place...

I also really, really hate the achievements in games like Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires for two reasons. 1. That they're all "Secret Achievements" and 2. That that is used as a means to hide the fact that they're very repetitive and are all basically "Beat this game mode" or "Play a match with this character.".

Worst achievements are the 'get all the other achievements' variety. Comes off really unimaginative.

Also bad---achievements based solely on chance, not skill (e.g. randomised loot drops, as in the 'Borderlands' Robot Revolution DLC, or some of the things in 'Bladestorm').

Pet peeve---achievements that are impossible to get. Like, I can't even try some games that used to be up on XBLA but have since been removed (really wanted to play 'Lost Cities', but they removed it somewhere between the time I downloaded the demo and the time I got around to playing it and wanting the full version). Likewise, you can't play 'Shadowrun' online, because they shut down the servers after the developer closed up shop. A little frustrating.

Achievements where you have to play poorly, like "Die 1000 times". If I finish the game and this is the last achievement to get, I feel compelled to act like an idiot and kill myself over and over.

There's an interesting article on Gamasutra re: achievement design. It's done by the achievements guy from Kongregate, and I totally agree with his guidelines. The part about multiplayer achievements rings particularly true for me; reminds me of all those "achievment grind" servers you'd join like a Pavlovian dog.

Mainly, ones that take a VERY long time.

i.e Assassin's Creed 1. 500 flags and you get only 10-20 G for each 100 you get. Not to mention they're hard as hell to find.

There's an achievement in Eternal Sonata that requires THREE full playthroughs to get. If you're not familiar with the game, Eternal Sonata is a 60+ hour JRPG, so you're talking about probably close to a 200 hour investment for an achievement

I also despise any achievement that is essentially "Perform this weird task at this hard to get to location at 3 in the morning."

-Anything that you get just for playing the game as intended. (beat chapter 5!) That isn't an achievement.
-Any achievement that requires you to do something more times than there's any reason to in one or two playthroughs. Even worse are the one's like Dragon Age's "Kill 1,000 Darkspawn", where it wouldn't be possible to finish in one playthrough even if you wanted to.
-Anything that requires you to play the game poorly. One of the Katamari games have a few achievements based entirely around repeatedly failing levels.

A frustratingly large number of achievements fall into those first two categories.

The rapid button pressing achievement early on in Blue Dragon. 5Gs I believe it was worth. No way it can be done without a rapid pad.

I don't like ones for doing annoying or boring things, like collecting junk. Most achievements suck, really. I would like them if they weren't a pain in the back.

I really hate glitched achievements. Missing several from 'Dragon Age 2' because they refused to pop. (Didn't bother trying to unlock any of them with reloads because I figured I'd be playing through DA2 a bunch of times, like I did 'Origins'. Then DA2 turned out to be not very good at all, and I ended up only going through it the one time. My need not to be bored stupid overwhelmed my baser completionist instincts.)

The ones that I hate the most are reach your head shot kills to 10000 and anything similar like that. Also the one play the game for 200 hours in total -_-

It has the same achievement with Soul Calibur 4. I agree with you on that.
