VGF Members Speedrunning Super Metroid

Post by Valigarmander » Fri Jul 31, 2015 1:10 am

Speedrunning Super Mario RPG was a ton of fun. So now I'm in the mood to take a crack at another one of my favorite games, and invite anyone else who's interested to join.

We're not trying to break the world record here (which is 0:44:26, btw), just casual speedrunning. Simply try to beat Super Metroid as quickly as you can. We'll be using these guidelines for the run:
"Definition for Traditional style Super Metroid any%:
- Defeats the main four bosses depicted in the statues blocking entrance to Tourian (Kraid, Phantoon, Draygon, Ridley) and goes on to defeat Mother Brain as well and go through the escape sequence.
- Stays within the boundaries of the map and limits the use of clips to entirely in boundary use (Wrecked Ship ceiling clip, Zebetite Skip)
- Does not use the GT Code
- No Abuse of Space/Time Beam or its variants

The heart and soul of the traditional any% category is to encapsulate the feeling it was to go through the game after first play and try to go through it as fast as possible. All exploits are done with the intention of working around the general design of the game, not the programming and/or its oversights."
So sequence breaking is okay as long as it doesn't abuse any major glitches or anything like that. The time shown at the end of the game will be the one you'll want to share in this thread. Item percentage is not important, but feel free to include it.

So who's ready for this? Image

HALL OF FAME
 1. Valigarmander (8/2/15) - 1:26 (39%)
 2. Valigarmander (8/1/15) - 1:48 (53%)

I should probably beat this normally before setting a record for longest speedrun.

Just completed my first run. 1:48 and 53%.

I ended with 9 Energy Tanks, 2 Reserve Tanks, 100 Missiles, 30 Super Missiles, and 10 Power Bombs. I skipped the X-Ray Scope and Spring Ball. The Energy/Super Missile count seemed about right to get me through Ridley (if you can kill him you can easily defeat anything left in the endgame), though I didn't need all those regular Missiles. I'll remember that for next time.

Best of luck. That's one of the hardest speed runs to do! (I'm not great at the franchise so I'll just sit back and watch~)
Do you know how much you mean to me
Why must you leave~?

Second run: 1:26 with 39%. Same items as before, only with just 35 Missiles and 5 Power Bombs. CAN I CUT IT DOWN EVEN FURTHER?

Just reached Maridia on my run. I'm doing 100%, or at least attempting to.

I would if I didn't get lost in Maridia every single time I play. :P

Approaching 3 hours, just beat The Riddler. Now I have to play "find the last few items." And by few I mean a lot. 230 missiles? Oh...

Instead of doing that, I reset- twice.

I should be able to hit under 2 hours if I optimize a bit more. Only had to go back for one Missile Tank at the Wrecked Ship. Seeing as I can now beat the game in one setting, I'll also RTA next time.

RTA: 2:20:24. In-game timer apparently pauses whenever you pause, get an item or change rooms. Enough SM for now.

August 19th:

RTA: 2:10:30
