Re: Sony announces PlayStation Classic
I don't remember if it was mechanical or not. It's been some twenty-five years, after all.
Commodore 64 was kind of a dumb system. All the components all strewn about. CPU/keyboard thing, floppy drive, tape-player, fan to stop the floppy drive and tape player from catastrophically melting down, and one of those old tvs that don't even have a coax, you have to connect through those dang antenna screws.
The games were kind of goofy. Bunch of 'em had dumb rubber keyboard overlays. Ridiculously byzantine software protection, sometimes-------------if I wanted to play 'Double Dribble', I had to locate the manual and enter some twenty-character passcode. It's 'Double Dribble', for cliff's sake, and they're protecting it as though I'm going to unleash Skynet, yeah.

I never had one of those computers, but I remember my uncle did. All I want to do is press start to play.
Now I know there's a reason you shouldn't blame others when you do something wrong, and that reason is: you might get caught and have to apologize to a bunch of dumb peasants.

Re: Sony announces PlayStation Classic
It did have the virtue of teaching me extraordinary patience. Commodore 64 had some load times on it, homey. Like, the carts were good to go instantly, but if you wanted to play something on floppy or tape, you had to be prepared to cool your jets for a while. Big reason I was never overly bothered by loading screens on PSX or anything else, was because none of them ever kept me waiting as long as the six minutes it took my Commodore 64 to boot up 'Tetris'.

I get the feeling that my favorite PS1 game - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 - will not be on there. Song licensing and whatnot.

Re: Sony announces PlayStation Classic
yeah. i do agree that most ps1/n64 games have aged like dirt but THPS2 still rules. Shame it has no chance on a classic console thing like this because of the licensing.

^ Let's just say that the fifth generation of consoles was video games' "awkward pubescent teenager" years.
I play THPS2 on my PS2 with component cables. That works for me. For now, at least.

Re: Sony announces PlayStation Classic
Yeah, in an era where you can now emulate a PSX on pretty much anything, that's an underwhelming range.

Underwhelming is the word I was going to use. A handful that might interest me, but they seem to be struggling just to hit the 20 mark.

Re: Sony announces PlayStation Classic
unfortunate that theres nothing in the realm of crash, spyro, or castlevania. wonder if thats got something to do with them all being part of recent/upcoming compilations

Re: Sony announces PlayStation Classic
Weirdly lacking in RPGs considering that seems to be what most people still like about PSX. FFVII was obvious, but Wild Arms and Persona seem like weird choices over, say, Suikoden II or Chrono Cross if they're going for recognition. Not that the other genres were much more consistent about that.

Re: Sony announces PlayStation Classic
yeah, a psx compilation like this just feels wrong without crash, spyro or castlevania. i get the reasons why they're not here, but it's still a bummer.

Re: Sony announces PlayStation Classic
You can really tell that this thing was hampered by licensing in its game selection.

Re: Sony announces PlayStation Classic
I guess that's one benefit Nintendo has over the competition when making classic consoles: a lot of the games are Nintendo's own properties.

Re: Sony announces PlayStation Classic
PS1 Mini really has a bad list and there's no real reason it couldn't be better. Something like Legend of Dragoon could easily replace like half the stuff on there.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were limited by the amount of storage memory in the thing.

Re: Sony announces PlayStation Classic
Reviews are out, and it's pretty much reiterating what's been said here: the games list is bad and there aren't enough features beyond the games themselves to make up for it.
It's sad. I have nostalgia for the PSX but there's likely no way they could've made one of these that collects the best of the best in the same way as NES and SNES Classics did.
Also it should be noted that many of the games included are the PAL editions, which run slower than other editions. Baffling.
