Is PS Plus worth it?

Post by VG_Addict » Thu Jul 06, 2017 5:34 pm

I'm thinking about buying a year's subscription for PS Plus. Is it worth it?

Do you have any games you want to play online? The monthly games are too random to be worth it alone.

I felt there was some value to it, but I have such a ridiculous backlog that it made more sense to me to get through that or buy games that I'm actually interested in rather than whatever Sony comes up with each month. That plus I am holding a grudge against Sony customer service for being awful.
I laugh in the face of danger, then I hide until it goes away.

You'll probably get a handful of good games in a year and possibly save yourself buying a few bad ones. The extra discounts might be worth $10-$20 depending on how much you buy from PSN. You also get online backups, which is nice, but the rest of the value comes from playing online on PS4. PS3 and Vita online are still free, as far as I know. Whether or not it's worth it comes down to how much those features are worth to you.

I renewed it this year, but the justification was almost entirely down to having $40 worth of games from it that I still intended to finish. I personally don't expect to get $60 worth of new content/discounts from it this year, but I also never play online.

Question you have to answer for yourself, homey.

I'm subscribed to XBGold, and I do next to no multiplayer gaming, and I've yet to play one of the free games. Suppose I could do without it, only I do use it occasionally enough to make it worthwhile, weighed against the pittance that five dollars a month is to me. Five dollars is nothing. I gave a bunch of dumbass high school kids five dollars to fund their class trip to Washington DC the other day (it was the fourth and i was feeling civic-minded) (also it was a warm bright sunshiney day and they were selling coffee, tea and cocoa on the street-----------like, were they literally retarded? hello, lemonade, maybe? kool-aid? cups of reconstituted gatorade? i mean, not even iced tea, man. i was moved to charity by a unique blend of pity, contempt and existential horror. nice guy boo).
boo------------------------------to fool the people is his only thought

Having been a PS plus member for 4 years, I would say 50 dollars a year is worth it.

Not really, unless you buy a lot of discounted games or like trying random crap. It is theoretically a good value but its only objectively good services are basic things which shouldn't be locked behind a paywall; online play and cloud saving.

Been a while since they've given out anything particularly good, too.

Especially for Vita, you'd think for a dying platform they'd try to do something to pique interest in non-owners by dropping good games on PS+, but nope.

^"Dying" is pretty generous at this point. The only two physical games still coming out for it are a remake of Velocity 2X, which could easily be a phone game, and the millionth remake of Hakuoki. It was a great system while it lasted, but at this point it's only getting digital releases of games that were easy to port.

Sony is in kind of a weird place with it for PS+, because although there are still good games for it they haven't given out (ZTD, Danganronpa 1/2, and Trails of Cold Steel, for example) all of them are either already on or presumably will come to PS4, and they'd rather you buy it there. I think they've completely written if off in the West, and they're probably only keeping it alive at all because it's still a decent source of income from dating sim sales in Japan.

^ It just got Romancing Saga 2 and is getting the Secret of Mana remake, pretty decent Square support, the latter of which Switch isn't even getting a port of. The Catherine remake and a couple more Persona spin-offs are coming as well so Atlus certainly has some interest in it. There are some other notable releases coming so it is a bit better off than people think in terms of content.

Physical releases are pretty few and far between outside of limited run stuff, yeah, but digital is growing into a preference now anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if next gen went that way completely like Sony already tried last gen with PSP (it failed because it was too early and done awkwardly but I think Sony anticipated the trend even back then).

Fair, but Sony's obscenely expensive Vita memory can make it difficult to work with digital. MSRP on a 64GB card is almost 3 times the equivalent MicroSD, and Sony never completely fixed the bizarre behavior while downloading in sleep mode.

Yeah, that's one of the many mistakes Sony made with Vita, it's a long list. Never making a 128 is another mistake.

Probably because it would've been in the $150-$200 range if they were following the same pricing curve. As useful as that would've been, having a memory card that costs almost as much as the base system or a cheap laptop is a pretty bad look.

I love the system (I finished almost twice as many games on it as anything besides PC), don't get me wrong, but at this point it's really hard to see anything it's got over the Switch in terms of hardware.

That's the thing, Vita is like a rabbit hole of mistakes, discuss one and more arise lol. I like Vita too, but it is a disaster.

As for the Switch, it is cool but as a handheld it has bad controls and is uncomfortable, kinda heavy, not really "pocket" portable, and is hardly more advanced than Dreamcast in terms of features. It has potential, I love the gimmick, but the inevitable revisions will be very welcome this time. Docked, however, most of those issues are/can be remedied. Then it seems underpowered from a home console perspective though, a new issue, same one that plagued PSTV.
