In this, we're seeing some more about the game and hinting at story elements, and it comes with the title "Life in the Ruins"

It doesn't seem much like a Zelda game. Looks like a kid friendly mod of Dark Souls got mashed together with Skyrim-lite with Zelda costumes. Hopefully the dungeons are classic Zelda. Seems like it could be neat but I gotta be honest, not feeling it. I tried to pretend otherwise but it looks kinda meh.

Good pickup!

Blue outfits seem to be a theme overall so far.

Dark Souls picked up a few design choices from Zelda, to be fair.

"looks like the best games in the industry" is a real and important criticism

Dark Souls is pretty overrated but I don't wanna derail this.

Doesn't look much like DS or Skyrim, aside from really general things neither game owe claim to. (ie: changing clothes or weapons, bad framerate)

Videos from October that I didn't know existed

Same. I don't have a good TV for it, but the Switch can be played as a handheld right? Consider me sold.

What choices? I don't recognise any Zelda in Souls games.

Mostly lock-on targeting and some other general things that most 3D adventure games borrow from LoZ now.

See, someone at my other Zelda site mentioned this and immediately got shot down, and I just was like... YOU DON'T KNOW.

Now, I personally have my doubts that they would be the same person, but damn wouldn't it be sweet as if a game would recognise for once that female characters (or male characters) can have different hairstyles depending upon the day? I mean, they finally started to do so with Peach in Super Mario 3D World by giving a ponytail when she gets the Fire Flower and all that, but it might be nice every once in a while to come to find some recurring NPC looks noticeably different when you encounter them from time to time rather than just using the same model every single time. (See also Sheik.)

See... okay, let me take a step back.

Define Zelda.

No seriously, define it. This is a troublesome point that I have attempted to do countless times in the past but have given up on because it's literally impossible.

Zelda is an adventure game? Nope, Zelda II is an RPG.
Zelda is a game involving dungeons? Nope, Four Swords doesn't have dungeons.
Zelda is a game with deep story? Nope, The Legend of Zelda doesn't have a lick of story in the game.
Zelda takes place in Hyrule? Nope, the Oracle games look at you.
Zelda has to have the princess and/or the Triforce? Nope, Link's Awakening.
Zelda is a game about exploration? Nope, Tri Force Heroes.
Overworld? Nope, Spirit Tracks.

The only thing that I have been able to settle on when it comes to Zelda is that it stars Link. The franchise crosses and transcends so many boundaries that it is hard to define what a Zelda game is. Certainly, for everyone out there, there is a concept of what they want Zelda to be and some algorithm to compute the difference between any given game and that ideal, but ask five people what Zelda is, and you'll get six answers.

I think you have the right idea, but several of those examples sound like exceptions that prove the rule to me. The big point of contention seems to be what should be primary to the series: story, combat, exploration or puzzle-solving.

It's clear thus far that BotW is putting more emphasis on combat and exploration, which will gel with fans that see the series as being about those two elements. Fans that see the series as being more about story and puzzles will be a bit more ambivalent.
