Wii and GC Hidden Gems

#1

Post by I am nobody » Sat Jan 26, 2019 7:47 pm

I wanted to finally properly play Galaxy 1 & 2, so I ordered a refurbished Wii recently that'll be here on Monday. I've had a Wii at my parent's place since not long after it launched and had a GC before that, but even though I read about loads of cult classics at the time, I never really played any beyond Metal Arms and Skies of Arcadia. Now that I've got the chance to dig around again (and since hidden gems are probably cheaper anyway), I'm wondering: anyone have some favorite obscure Wii or GC games?

I'm always going to shill for Gotcha Force. It's like Virtual-On mixed with... well, it's more Gatcha then Pokemon, but it's a collect-em-all style game.

There's Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2, and Wario World is great.

For Wii, you can look for Punch Out Wii... Um, I don't have a lot of Wii games I've played and beaten strangely enough. See if No More Heroes 1 and 2 are up your alley or not, maybe?

I see you've already covered Metal Arms and Skies of Arcadia. I don't know if they qualify as hidden gems, but I can second Punch-Out (one of my favorite games on the Wii tbh) and the No More Heroes duology (though only if you're a fan of the hack-and-slash genre; the gameplay isn't NMH's strongest aspect but the humor and the characters are great).

Games I've never played myself but have often had recommended to me include Eternal Darkness and Killer7.

For GameCube, Lost Kingdoms is seldom mentioned but very fun. Star Fox Adventures isn't hidden in the typical sense but is **** on a lot despite being good. Then there's Mega Man Network Transmission, which has the same problem as Star Fox Adventures; it's not bad but isn't what people wanted or expected. I do think MMNT is forgotten though.

Wii is where I sort of lost interest in Nintendo consoles. I'd probably need to find a hidden gems list myself if I went through its library.

idk if its considered obscure or not but The Simpsons: Hit & Run is genuinely pretty good. a handful of the missions are brutal though so be warned if you're going for 100% completion

'Jerry Rice and Nitus' Dog Football' is rad and hilarious. I'd rather play that than Madden any day of the week, homey.

For various definitions of "hidden gem": Eternal Darkness

And remember, "This can't be happening...."

^Oh, stop. Everyone and his grandmother knows 'Eternal Darkness'. Would you say that's anywhere near as underground as 'Zack and Wiki' or 'Dog Football'?

Muramasa for Wii is a beautiful Metroidvania that everyone should experience.

^ I agree, but it's worth mentioning that an enhanced port exists for the Vita with new content.

Idk, like
PokePark 2 Wonders Beyond
Epic Mickey

That's all my Monday brain can help with for today.

If you haven't played Chibi Robo, it's easily one of the best games for Gamecube and usually overlooked.

I enjoyed BloodRayne and the Lost Kingdoms games. BloodRayne probably hasn't aged well, I'd wager.

Ikaruga is pretty good, but unforgivingly hard.

MVP Baseball 2005 is my favorite baseball video game.

I don't have a good read on the popularity of TimeSplitters 2 (but I wouldn't have thought people didn't know SoA), but it's excellent.

Ooh. 'Darkened Skye' is cool. Like who cares about the stupid Skittles-----doesn't hurt the game hardly at all.

I've already got the PC version, but that really is a great game. It takes a lot to get people to be disappointed that EA lost a license.

Not particularly obscure, though the Gamecube version probably is. I always enjoy GTA, so it was fun to play basically that as a Simpson. Probably the only actually good The Simpsons game there is.
Competition is a good thing. It's a chance to crush people.

Konami's The Simpsons arcade game, if the Japanese version is played at least (much more fair regarding health pickups), is pretty decent.
